I didn't have any assignment last night so I decided to shoot HS basketball. The difference being that I would only take my 135mm f/2.0L lens. That lens has always been a favorite of mine but it hasn't been used much since the 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II. Here are the results. All were at ISO 3200, 1/800sec, and f/2.0. The dof is thin, the shots are tight, 1/800 is bit slower than I'm used to, and ISO 3200 is better than typical. What do you guys think? Yea or Nay?

Boys images to follow.

A "yea" from me too. I love the 135 when I have to shoot basketball ambient.

Though I understand the white balance issues that come from shooting ambient in gyms. My only other crit would be a couple tilted horizons. But I also understand that if they were tight, you may not be able to straighten them without cutting off limbs, etc.

Always enjoy your work Phil. :-)

Love the 135 for hoops and you did really well with it. Love the above rim perspective as that is something I have to force myself to do as I usually just sit baseline which gets boring. You know abut a few of the horizons so the only other thing I'd mention is that it seems like you might have made a WB adjustment that really helped the later images you posted. Im sure you could change in post if you wanted but I think it looks much better in the second set and even the later ones in that set.

I have the same issue with lenses... once I got the 70-200 isII, I haven't really used the 135 very much. It was also my go-to basketball lens at one time.

Just recently, I gave the 135 another try. In my case, I actually thought the 70-200 images were sharper. That surprised me a lot. This was comparing photos in a pretty well lit gym though... if that weren't the case, then the extra stop of light on the 135 is hard to replace.

Great work from you, as always, although I'll agree about the white balance. Seems to be a bit off on these.
