6TB Seagate USB3

Costco has these for $120 if anyone needs additional storage or backup.

It's called a Backup Plus Hub.
I picked one up to backup my Drobo.

Problem is most people don't find out what drive is actually inside. These externals often have different drive models in them, hard to track a failure/issue if you can't target the specific drive. Also, the large drives have had issues when they are new, 6TB drives have been around for awhile now.

Yep. I always look at the product codes and only buy server class drives. No desktop drives for me! It’s not that much more of a cost and well worth it.

The Western Digital Gold line is quite nice. Capacities from like 1 TB to 12 TB. Search for “Server class hard drives” for real hard drives. Otherwise those “OK only” desktops show up. I’ve had WD drives for over 10 years. They work.

You can get em from the usual amazon and other suspects.

I prefer reliability over desktop drives. And triple backups weekly/incremental and monthly. And recoverable from bare metal.

The 6GB / 128MB cache looks reasonably priced at circa. $250.00.

Just need an external case to house it in with a USB 3.0 / Firewire interface - will look around for one!

I buy the cheapest brand-name drives I can find for backups. They log about 2 hours of use per month, pretty light duty. Never had one fail on me. And if one fails, no problem, older files are backed up in quadruplicate.

I just go with quality period. Both valid choices.

I have Seagate 8TB Backup plus hub for Mac, the white one, and i keep it connected to my Mac computer only, but i use it for something else not photography, but it helped me a lot to free spaces on another hard drives such as 2-4GB ones so i can use them again for either photography or anything else, later i will buy one more but the black one and keep it for Windows, so this will make me to manage and archive my all files better, and maybe more drives to free so i can use it them again for anything else, i just got into Astrophotography and the files i get are really huge, so need HDD for that definitely more than photography which i have a long break from.

For backup (cold storage for sequential access data), cache size makes zero difference.

As for WD Gold, it is actually called "enterprise" grade drive. The reason it is so expansive has a lot to do with the qualifying procedure to meeting Enterprise requirement. Sure it is higher quality, most importantly more consistent. But for an average backup usage, ie. power on once in a while for incremental change data. Number of "cycles" on this usage is most likely "1". The requirement for both power on time and cycles are extremely low. Even the lowest end drive will do just fine. In this case, the only advantage of enterprise grade drive is the consistency, in a sense that chance you are getting a lemon is much much lower with the Gold. Then again, for this particular usage, you should either notice the lemon on your first power on. And if it function OK for the first time, most likely it will last for the minimal stress this drive will encounter throughout the life.

Ive also used GRCs utilities to do surface test and refresh. Trust but verify...

I am a big fan of many multiple back ups, tend to replace main photo drive each year and then move drives down the back up chain and get a USB drive on alternate years. There are 4 copies of all photos in the home plus a copy on Amazons servers (free with Prime) plus spare copies at my dad's house and in the car. The last two tend to be done monthly one mid one start of month. I lost two disks a few years ago they had the same files on them, thankfully the third drive at fathers covered it so I became even more obsessive (OK far too) over backing up. I do but better quality drives and swap between makers as well.
