Challenge #669: Turn

This week, the daily path of the sun, edging southward for the past six months, pauses and starts to turn north; soon the calendar will turn over to begin a new year. Accordingly, this week’s topic is Turn. Let’s see a variety of creative interpretations.
Remember, if you post a photo, you may be the winner. Be prepared to host and judge a new challenge.

To submit, click POST TO THREAD and put your photo title in the first line of the post. Don't forget your camera model.

Post until Monday noon GMT, 25 December 2017.

Photo Submissions

  1. Camera -- Canon G-Series Camera G1, G2, G3, G5, G6, G7, G9, G10, G11, G12, G15, G16, G1X, G1X Mark II and Pro1 only.

  2. Time -- Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.

  3. Size -- Photo must be no less than 800 pixels and no more than 1280 pixels on the longest side, with NO BORDERS.

  4. Post-Processing -- Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.

  5. Posting --
    • One photo per photographer in each challenge.
    • Photo title in the message subject line.
    • Camera model.
    • EXIF data, if you like.

  6. Commenting -- No commenting on photos by anyone, including the photographer. Once the winners are declared, photographers can add comments to their images and everyone is invited to discuss.

  7. Photo Display -- Photos must appear in this thread to be eligible.

One challenge every week, on the following schedule:
  • New Topic ... As soon as possible after winning.

Challenge is closed. I'll post results as soon as the cowrie shells and I Ching straws settle out and identify the winners for me.

RESULTS

M_Six, "Turning to Seed"

Well-balanced placement of dark and light areas, effective use of DoF. Was this an ornamental grass?

Stiga, "My turn for a hug"

Cute little charmers in nice light light to show up their contour and textures. The troughlike beak on the smaller one suggests that perhaps this sculpture is a fountain attached to a water pipe.

Maureen Souza, "Turning & Twisting"

The title says it all. That's an impressive turn and twist. A little noisy, and a few unwanted white patches.

Jim Askew, "Turned Heads"

Another surprising interpretation. Peaceful, relaxing garden scene, maybe slightly overexposed?

teekay, "Turn Here For 2018"

A cold welcome to the new year? Good handling of what I'd guess was difficult light.

Trumper, "Blooming Sat Navs"

More than one wrong turn in evidence there. Well, it's easy to get lost in that fog, with or without technology to "help."

Thanks to all for responding to this challenge. After the usual shuffling and dithering, these are my choices:

#1. M_Six, "Turning to Seed"
#2. Maureen Souza, "Turning & Twisting"
#3. teekay, "Turn Here For 2018"

Honorable mention for humor: Trumper, "Blooming Sat Navs"

I found it really hard to think of any photo for this subject, so I admire the ingenuity of all the entries. My own favourite was Trumper's tracks in the muddy field - I've been led astray myself by a GPS more than once.

Now back to check on the turkey in the oven...;-)a

Thanks for the nod, OhLook. That plant is in a small patch outside the biology building on our campus. I'm not sure if it's native to this area, but there are lots of "imported" plants like that around campus.

Well done with the other entries, folks. Some interesting interpretations.

I'll get a new round up shortly.

Congrats to Mark & thanks for 2nd. My shot was taken on a windy day under a dark shade tree but when the wind blew the feathers, it was all white underneath. I actually toned it down some in PS.

I sm currently looking at a new G Series camera & waiting to see if after Christmas sales will help

Thanks for hosting during Christmas week, OhLook.
