Heading there for the first time and debating whether or not to bring my 500II. (Never been to Hawaii before.)
I will take my 5DIV and 5DsR along with 16-35 f/4, 24-70 f/2.8 II, 100-400 II extenders and a tripod.
I am considering other lenses to bring. (See my sig.)

Any suggestions from others who have been there?

I've never been, but if I did I'd probably love under water housing. Enjoy!

If you have 100-400 and you have extenders, why bother with additional bulk and weight of a 500mm

At this point I am inclined to leave my 500 at home.

Considering bringing my 70-200 f/2.8 as well.

At this point I'll probably bring along my 70-200 f/2.8 as well, I don't want to be limited to anything slower than that.

Current list: 16-35 f/4, 24-70 f/2.8L II, 70-200 f2.8L, 100-400 II, extenders, tripod & 2 bodies.

Leave the big gun behind; it won't be worth the trouble of hauling down there and you may run afoul of weight limits on the puddle jump to Kauaii. The 100-400 will get you close enough to the critter (even roped off Monk Seals) that you'll likely be inside 400mm most of the time. Given that kit, I'd likely pare it down further and leave either the 16-35 or 24-70 behind as well; whichever one you generally use less. My suspicion is you'll find the 70-200 mounted most often, with specific incidents that cause you to switch to the wide or longer telephoto on occasion.

This is for Kauaii, specifically; I've never been to Oahu.

Good gravy, man.....you're gonna need to charter a freight plane just to carry all the hardware. I'd never carry that much stuff on a trip like that. That'd be a pain in the butt just to haul it all around.

......and you're looking to bring more?

wow

I have been to Oahu. One body, 24-70 and 100-400, light tripod should cover everything.

I've been to the Hawaii islands three times, and found very little use for an ultra wide angle zoom, and my only use for a telephoto was when whale watching. I would suggest traveling on the lighter side -- your 24-70 and one telephoto should be enough. Unless you are whale watching, I would also only bring a single body.
