I'd do 7D, for the buffer and speed, for pure birds in flight.

If you're just doing big slow birds and birds that are perched, then the 70D would be totally fine.

The Tamron lens is fine with both. Both have MFA. The 70D has more modern MFA (both min & max side).

Very best,

70D is perfectly capable for BIF...even if they're not just big slow birds...it's only 1 extra fps as far as burst

it's got slightly higher/better ISO, and more mp in case you need to crop a bit more...

i'd go 70D, but i don't think you can go wrong with either choice, they're both more than capable

If you can swing the extra cash... The 7D2 is a top-notch action (of all types) camera... It's quite a bit better than the 7D or 70D. The 80D is pretty decent also...

Really looking at the 80D, just to make sure my Tamron is compatible?

It is. Every Canon from the 1D mark II and later era will work with it.

I use the 7D/tamron 150-600 for most of my bird photos. And while it works ok, it's also often frustrating because of various focus problems.

Here are some of my pictures including BIF with the combo https://500px.com/peterbruusmadsen (external link)

I had both bodies. Of these two, I'd take the original 7D every time. Eight FPS for the 7D. IIRC, the 70D was a bit under 7 FPS. AF is a draw, maybe a slight edge to the 70D. Unless you're shooting birds at f/1.2, the AF differences won't matter. F/4 to f/5.6 covers a lot of AF sloppiness. The advantage of the 7D is processing speed and buffer depth. That said, the 70D will perform beyond it specs with faster SD cards (150 mb/s). Most Canon cameras outperform their specs.

Buffer is the question and the answer. All mentioned can do it, 80D is really nice, 7D2 will have a much better buffer, for burst shooting. Depends on what you are going for.

Godox/Flashpoint r2 system, plus some canon stuff.

My top rec's would be: 7DII > 80D > 70D > 7D if you're just getting into it:
https://www.dpreview.com …70d&products=canon_eos80d (external link)

  • 7DII gives you the highest ISO performance, best AF system, highest FPS (10, but configurable between High, Normal and Silent shooting), newest image processor (x2), larger buffer and most available AF points (65)
  • 80D gives you a tie for second highest ISO performance and reports to handle higher ISOs slightly better than the 7DII, tie for lowest FPS (7), newest image processor, DPAF if you use Live View for focusing, decent AF system and second most AF points (45)
  • 70D is the other tie for second highest ISO, ties for lowest FPS (7), second oldest image processor, similar AF module to the 7D, DPAF if using Live View
  • 7D gives you the second fastest FPS (8), lowest ISO, oldest image processor, lowest resolution

Depending on your lens lineup, budget, etc, you might also choose to throw a used 1D IV into the list of considerations. After shooting the 7D/7DII birding for the better part of the last decade, that is still one I would consider strongly if I didn't have the 7DII dialed in already. Beefier build, stupid fast AF, slightly lower crop factor and customizable as all hell.

I had the 70D, and still have the 80D. No way you can call their respective high-ISO performance the same. The 70D is clean enough (my standards) to shoot JPG at 3200, and 6400 needs to be shot raw and PP'd, 12800 is barely usable. The 80D is quite usable at ISO 16000, and in decent light, I'll use 12800 while shooting JPG. The 70D doesn't even come close to that.

EDIT:
I checked out the link, and I believe I found the source of my disagreement with your claim. Both the 70D and 80D are capable of ISO 25,600; the setting is available on the dial. I find that meaningless. Canon could put ISO 7 billion on its P&S, that doesn't mean it is useful. The 70D is barely usable (even by my standards) at ISO 12,800. The 80D is quite usable at ISO 16000. I don't have direct comparison photos, but I'd call the 80D at 16000 just a tad worse than the 70D at 6400. I'm happy calling that 1.5 stops. The cameras may have the same settings on the dial; they do not turn in the same performance.

If you are taking the camera out in the boonies, the 7D all the way. It is way better built. It works well with the big Tammy.
