If they provide box and all the accessories, and a warranty (return period?) of some sort, it is in the ball park. If not, you can do better right here on POTN. JamesonVermaat has one for sale for $1,000. It was in excellent shape when I sold it to him about 8 months ago. There are 2 or 3 others listed here, also.

EDIT:
Spelling correction.

An excellent camera that gets most any photographic job done. I have no idea what they are going for now but I know I wouldn't part with mine for $1200. I guess Adorama probably has at least a 30 day guarantee so try it out. Be sure to get the owners manual (but you can download a copy too) as there are many custom settings and features.

I think the going rate is $1000 up to $.... well, I don't know the very top range. I bought one recently with a shutter count of 75k that looked brand new. It was a studio camera so didn't see much action outdoors.

Like Tom said, there are several for sale here, at Adorama, B&H (very expensive) and eBay. I bought both of mine on eBay and both work flawlessly. I did buy from sellers with long, positive track records.

I'd feel completely safe buying from a long standing POTN seller as well... you know, someone like Tom or the person to whom Tom had sold a particular camera. ;)

Doesn't make sense to buy from a dealer because they charge more for the same thing.

Buy used from an individual here, on Fred Miranda, or on eBay. You'll get the same quality camera for less money.

A warranty doesn't matter at all because nothing goes wrong with these cameras. . Peace of mind is way overrated.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Tom,

I know that's what I did. The dealers take the cameras in in trade for the most and have to make a profit on them, so yes, their prices usually reflect that. Of course, they sometimes offer a warranty of some sort.

That said, you often get a return period when buying from an individual as well. I actually felt pretty good about buying a used 1D IV with some mileage on it. You don't take thousands of out of focus photos, so you can be pretty confident that a used 1D IV will perform as advertised.

Here is a link to the 1D4 I referred to above (apologies for spelling his name wrong):
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1489935

Here is a link to me selling my 1D4 to him:
https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1478758

Keep in mind that this may NOT be the same camera I sold him, but most likely is. Ask him to be sure. I'd also like to add that I sold my 1D4 as part of downsizing my gear. I wrecked my motorcycle and can/could no longer manage heavy gear for my field sports shooting. I loved the 1D4 and had no problems at all with it. I went from 1D4/100-400Lc to 80D/70-300 II (cut my camera/lens weight almost in half), and that is working just fine for me.

Agreed. The 1D4 is a rock-solid camera. Mine had just over 100k on it when I sold it. That means I put 10-15k on it while I had it. I NEVER had an OOF shot that I could blame on the camera. I can say the same for my 80D.

This may be the right place to mention that I did a TON of research while considering the move FROM 1D4 to ???. I ended up with the 80D. The way I see things from here, if I need a better sports/action camera than the 80D, I am compelled to contemplate the 1DX2 (which I can't afford). I'd go back to the 1D4 first.

That's where I am, though I can still handle the weight of my 1D IV's. I have my sights/sites (both appear to be correct) on a 1D X2 sometime next year. I have decided against the 5D IV, though I know it's an excellent camera with more megapixels but for what I do, the next step up is the 1D X2. I know I could get a 1D X for less.... but I'd want the latest improvements Canon has made.

I still get great photographs from the 1D IV. I love the colors and how dependable it is. Like you said, if I miss a shot, it's me. It isn't a low light camera, but other than that, it's pretty darn good.

We may charge more, but a buyer does have peace of mind with Adorama's 180-day warranty - which includes a 30-day no quibble returns period.

Warranty matters to some people. I wouldn't pay a lot more for a used camera with a warranty - some folks would. Just like some folks insist on new, while lots of us save ~20% by buying refurbished. I think each item offered for sale deserves individual consideration.

Personally, I won't buy used, and forego the new/refurb warranty, unless the item saves me more than about 20%. Then again, not all items are available new/refurbished. The 1D4 is not, so anyone in the market for one is buying used gear.

Generous, indeed. Thanks, Helen.
