What to buy Canon 5D3 or 5D4 or ??

Can someone give me a head start on what makes most since, I had no plans to purchase a new Canon body but my circumstance may force me to upgrade.
I have a 5D2 now-

Since I haven’t been in the loop regarding the 5D3 or 5D4 I sure like to hear advice on what makes the most since to purchase. I’ll have to admit at this point, I don’t even know when the 5D4 was introduced.

Is there anything else I should consider including mirrorless.

EOS 5D Mark IV is the latest in 5 D series introduced about four months back. Has many improvements over Mark III . You may read its reviews and then decide whether to go for Mark III or Mark IV.

It would help if you would give some idea of the types of things you are shooting, the glass you have, and what you are looking for in a new body versus the 5D2.

Skip the 5D3 and go to the 5D4 if you have the funds. It is almost always the situation where skipping a generation as you upgrade is a better move.

The 5D3 is a great improvement over the 5D2 for sure, but the 5D4 goes beyond that yet.

5D4 over the 5D2 (some of these the 5D3 has, but in many cases, the 5D4 extends the functionality):
- Dual slots, faster SD over the 5D3
- Flicker control
- Touch screen
- Wifi/FTP/Web Services
- Great AF system, 5D3 had something close to the 1DX, the 5D4 has something close to the 1DX2
- New sensor, greater low ISO DR
- Cleaner high ISO
- 30Mpx
- Near dark AF
- GPS
- Better rear LCD
- Faster burst, longer bursts
- Better sealing
- HDR mode, Multiexposure Mode, High ISO Merge mode
- Edit raw in camera
- Better AWB
- Lack of banding when pushing shadows
- Generally better colors (IMO)
- DPAF for live view
- Better video
- AFMA, with 2 adjustments per telephoto lens
- Better menu structure, My Menu with multiple menus
- Button customization
- Spot AF
- Orientation linked AF point

The one and only advantage the 5D2 has over the 5D4 is the old-school LED per acquired AF point in the viewfinder vs the LCD overlay with a black AF point.

I have both and the 5D4 has many improvements. It shoots in darker conditions, has more pixels to allow for more cropping and is faster. When you load two cards in either camera the max speed will revert to the speed of the slowest card. Since the 5D4 has a much faster SD slot more shots can be take before hitting buffer (assuming you're using fast cards). Under normal conditions the picture quality is similar. But when conditions get tricky the 5D4 allows you to get the shot. I initially thought I wouldn't use the touch screen but it allows you to work much quicker. GPS and Wi-Fi are useful features - not gimmicks. When shooting a wedding I can place the camera behind the minister and via Wi-Fi control the camera from my phone. Very convenient. Only downside of the 5D4 is slightly shortened battery life. Not really an issue if you always carry a spare.

Something I just dug into with my 5D4 are the web services. I now can take shots from the floor during our NBA season, and then select which pictures the camera will upload to Google Drive for the social media person to pull for their score and photo updates. This occurs completely from the camera; that is HUGE... and differentiates me from the others that either cannot do this, or don't know how.

I used to have to pull pictures onto my phone from the camera, then upload from there or email.

The downside is that the camera is locked up while web services are engaged.

I concur with what everyone has said about the 5D4

Its the best of any of the 5D series cameras.

I have a 5D3 thats high on the count and my assistant has the 5D4. Used them both a lot. 5D4 blows the 5D3 away in my opinion. Has a full stop ISO improvement and I love the touch screen. Im impressed with the 5D4. Tough call for me on a 5D4. They are 3200.00 and for 3500.00 you can find cheap low count 1Dx bodies now. So lots to think about.

If you are not shooting above 6400 ISO and in darker situations, then a 5D3 is a great way to go

Vs. 5D2 the biggest advantage the 5D3 will have is improved AF performance in all aspects. Better ergonomics/many more control features would be 2nd on my list. IQ is improved, but the differences are mostly incremental

Vs. 5D2 the 5D4 advantages are too many to count! Best AF system ever put in any body that doesn't say "1Dx" on it,. vastly improved IQ, noise handling, DR, etc.

For how long is it locked up for you?

While the camera connects to the phone and then to Google drive for authentication, then while the pictures are transferred.

I have a Canon 5D markIV on the way to me now, I ended up buying new with the printer rebate.

Now what to do with my Canon mark II, it’s been cleaned and it’s on it’s way back, shutter count is only 5859 shots, what’s it worth to sell?

In great shape with the box and all goodies and that low of a shutter count, perhaps $750 or so, 825 with grip. My guess is that you will end up netting around $700 ultimately on the body, but ask a bit high and get talked down. This is what I would think in the US used market anyways. You will probably have to sell off the grip first though, it is easier to sell off accessories individually than to try to include them in a larger deal.
