I'm thinking about upgrading my current 70-200mm f/4 to an f/2.8 and the new Tamron G2 lens is on my candidate list. Can any current (or past) owners of this lens offer their opinions/experiences on the overall quality of this lens? In particular:

  1. How many copies did you try before finding an acceptable one?
  2. Did you see any centring/alignment issues* (asymmetric resolution, off-axis focal plane, nasty halos, etc.)? If so, was it resolved by warranty service?
  3. Did it focus correctly out-of-the-box? If not, were you able to resolve this with the Tamron TAP-IN console?

Thanks in advance!

*In the past six years at least, almost every zoom or floating-focus prime I have bought has had some sort of centring issue, to the extent I now consider decentring factory standard for all manufacturers.

I have had mine for just under a year now and love it. Have taken 1000's of photos with it.

1. I had 2 copies. I should have only had my original but it was so long since I used a 70-200 I was shooting wrong. Was expecting to much out of the lens at close distance with very fast moving subject
2. No issues with build at all.
3. Mine needed some adjustments but with the Tapin i pretty much got it spot on.
The lens is very accurate and very consistent with focus, af is also very fast and keep up with fast action no problems.
