I know intervalometers aren't terribly expensive (if you buy a third-party model), but a friend and I decided to build one even cheaper. A bit of time soldering the bits together and building the case, lots of time writing the code. The final product is polished and fairly intuitive :)

some fairly old canon camera stuff, canon lenses, Manfrotto "thingy", and an M5, also an M6 that has had a 720nm filter bolted onto the sensor:
