click yes

system: last chance, are you really really sure you want to unfollow this thread?
click yes.

A bit of an exaggeration, yes, And not trying to be sarcastic. Just trying to make a point.
Do we really need to jump thru so many hoops?

click "followed"
system: do you want to unfollow this thread? Yes. No.
click yes
Done.

Not to mention the fact if you post in a thread then unfollow it, after you jump thru all the hoops to unfollow it, you get additional popups stating you just posted in a thread that is not followed and asking if you want to follow it.

Way too many hoops. Just my opinion.

A bit of an exaggeration, yes,

I think that you are the one who has exaggerated.

There is never any "last chance" popup, nor is there any extra popup that explains that notifications will not be received - that is already explained in the "are you sure" popup. . I think it is important to have this explanation, because it is good to know exactly what unfollowing a thread will do. . If the explanation were not there, then we may think that we will stop receiving notifications for new posts, but that the old notifications that are there from previous new posts would remain.

It is good that Pekka tells us exactly what will happen to both new post notifications and the existing notifications from previous posts.

Extreme thoroughness and comprehensive information are sadly lacking in many of todays websites, and I really appreciate that Pekka makes sure that every single thing about POTN is explained to us in a clear, forthright manner.

You say that there are 4 different popups and that we need to click "YES" 4 different times, but that is not the case at all.

There are only two "hoops" to jump through.

These are the only popups that appear when I unfollow a thread:

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

That's what he said, Tom. He was exaggerating in order to make a point.

I have to say that I too seriously dislike those "are you sure?" notifications. And yes yes, I know, you could accidentally click the wrong button. So what? Just correct your mistake. And in Search e.g. you have the History tool that takes you right back to where you were so why ask for a confirmation there at all is beyond me.

But that second pop-up does more than just have us confirm. . It acts as an opportunity to explain exactly what happens when we unfollow a thread, inasmuch as the current (existing) notifications are concerned. . I see value in that. . Any time one can ensure that everybody knows everything that is happening, and all of the ramifications of their actions, no matter how minor those may be, so much the better. . Humans tend to miss things or skip over things, so having an extra step in there to ensure that that never happens is important.

I find it easier to "unfollow" multiple threads at one time.
- Click the Followed+Own button (left top next to FYEO).
- Select all the threads you would like to unfollow (could be one) by clickng on the check box in the far right column.
- Click 'stop following x selected' at the bottom right of the table.

You will be unsubscribed from the selected threads, no questions asked :-)

But be sure that is what you want, because getting back to those threads could get painful.

CC always welcome.

Confirmations have to be there, as in mobile/tablets unintentional hits are very likely.

Also, in my view anything destructive that is without undo needs a confirmation. Adding or starting something does not.

In AMASS 2.0 (planned release in two weeks) where ever you see purple FOLLOWED plate/box (in new posts, thread lists, even search results) you can click that box and unfollow that thread with a single confirm.

I completely agree with this, and it is very helpful to me.

Even when using my desktop computer, it is so easy to inadvertently click something that I did not mean to click.

I usually have 70-110 internet tabs / windows open at any given time, and it is so easy to click on something that is in a different window than the one I thought I was in. . I am glad that when I accidentally do this on POTN, nothing will be permanently altered on me.

Unfortunately, many other websites do not have this safeguard, and I do sometimes lose valuable information or sometimes just lose my place (which is also a big deal at times even though it doesn't sound like a very big deal).
