I seen where the first version came out in 01' and the second version came out in 2010. I figured it was around that time for a new one to be released.

Looks like they are updating the 70-200 F4 IS next month.

Typical Canon updating one of their best lenses when they have a whole tank of bigger fish to fry. Now I need to decide if I want to sell my 70-200/4 IS before it's worthless and upgrade to a 2.8 version like I have been battling in my head over for the past few eyars.

Canon 7D/350D, Σ17-50/2.8 OS, 18-55IS, 24-105/4 L IS, Σ30/1.4 EX, 50/1.8, C50/1.4, 55-250IS, 60/2.8, 70-200/4 L IS, 85/1.8, 100/2.8 IS L, 135/2 L 580EX II, 430EX II * 2, 270EX II.

How do you update something that is already near perfect? That lens is a gem already - what can they be doing to improve it?

.
Utilize new coatings.

Update to the latest generation of Image Stabilization, which should be a significant increase over the existing lens' IS.

Decrease the minimum focus distance, such as they did when the updated the 100-400mm. This would make it a bit more capable of a closeup lens.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

Add a bell, or maybe a whistle, then charge $1000 more for it then watch Canon’s stock price go up.

It's not near perfect. Not even close. The centre is really good but the edges, not so. Near perfect would be excellent image quality across the image plane - something the mk2 does not deliver. It's still Canon's best though
