Seeking: Lens with 400mm Reach

Seeking a lens with 400mm reach to use with my Canon 7D Mark II. I am open and flexible to brand, Canon..Sigma..Tamron..​etc. Also open to it being fixed focal or zoom. Intended for wildlife photography. NOT for "bird in flight" type photography. I photograph mostly slower moving animals or animals that are still and mostly in a rain forest setting.

My criteria is that the lens be in excellent cosmetic and functioning condition as well as I DO NOT generally like to buy lenses that are more than 5 or 6 years old.

Otherwise, the obvious will be Canon 100-400 MK II.

Based on your criteria, a used 100-400 MK I is not going to be young enough.

And if you need a budget option, the Tamron 100-400 VC is a new contender for half the cost of the new Canon MKII.

I'm flexible on budget. I would be open to the 100-400 Ver. II but it would have to be priced aggressively. Meaning better than the roughly $1700 most sellers are trying to sell these for. I'm in no rush and have the luxury of time as my next scheduled trip is not until October. But if I find a "too good to pass up" deal today I'm ready to move. I will read up on the Tamron you referenced as well. Thank You.

If you are asking for '400mm reach' and use the 7DII, are you not simply looking for something 'at least of 250mm FL' ...a 7.2 degree diagonal AOV?!
If so, getting a 70-200mm and a 1.4x teleconvertor is a reasonable consideration...the excellent Canon 70-200 f/4 with 1.4x teleconvertor has been tested and shown to suffer only 10% loss in MTF, and that gives you a 280mm f/5.6 lens..about the same effective aperture and same MTF as the 100-400mm at 300mm

Get a 300 f4. Not that expensive, and you'll need all the speed you can get in the rainforest.

Exactly! a far less expensive way to get to the same end result. So you end up with 280mm f/4...equiv. to 448mm on FF for reach.
All the Canon 70-200 versions are extremely well complemented with a 1.4X teleconvertor, with only about 10% loss in MTF scores, per photozone.de testing (which unfortunately they stopped doing in recent years)

Are you referring to the 70-300mm L lens? If so I already have that one.

I have a 100-400, I am the original owner in excellent condition smoke free home and used very little reason for selling I am moving over to Sony. I will take $1,600.00 net to me and I will pay shipping.

As one who has a lot of experience shooting wildlife, I think this is a poor idea.

There is no need to "cheapskate your way into" more reach when you have an ample budget and there are so many GREAT lens choices that get you to a true 400mm focal length.

It's not about math or angle of view or crop factors. . It is about optical quality, autofocus ability, and the overall aesthetics of the images you take.
