Yep that kitty is gonna be legendary around POTN.

Back to the G9, I have been reading the manual ( ) and there is a lot there. More setting and options than I've ever seen on a camera. How long is it gonna take me to figure out how to take a picture?

Still waiting. Camera is suppose to arrive open April 3,

Sounds like my cat has worn out her welcome, sorry for overposting. She is just a readily available subject and my work schedule doesn’t allow me much opportunity to get out for shooting opportunities right now.

As for the camera, I am a “play with it first, read book later” guy. I fiddle with it and if I can’t figure some thing out, then I check manual. Didn’t take long at all to start taking pics. Just be aware of the hair trigger. If you’ve been able to play with one you probably already know.

There are a few changes to default settings I made right away. Main one is to have screen/EVF display simulated exposure. Default for some reason is a bright display at all times.

I’m glad it has the “My Menu” tab where you can register your frequent menu items for quick access similar to Canon bodies. It is one of my favorite features and part of why I ditched the GX85 in favor of the GX9.

I’ve yet to do much in the way of customizing function buttons. The defaults seem to work pretty good for me.

I came across the following tips/tricks guide I think is pretty good. Warning, there are a LOT of ads on the page. I ended up copying it all and editing it down to just the info then saving as a PDF.

For anyone interested in an “L” bracket, I picked up the SmallRig G9 offering and after using it for a week or so now thought I would give my opinion on it.

Fit and finish are good. It says it is Arca compatible and for the most part I agree. It would not lock down into my Manfrotto head though but the top plate on that isn’t “standard” and instead of a clamp of sorts when you tighten it down, it has a “tab” that is meant to lock into the rail. However trying to lock it, the tab on the head levered the bracket up and out of position.

I really like that tripod and head, so the answer was to swap a different top plate to the head with a “regular” style clamp to lock it in. My other tripod heads all work fine with it.

The L design allows you to open the flippy screen, but limits the positions you can use it with. You can extend it out to the side, have it face forward, but if you want it facing up or down, you can only extend it out about 135 degrees instead of the full 180. The side piece of the bracket can be removed for uninhibited flippy screen if you aren’t going to need portrait orientation of the plate.

The plate completely covers the bottom of the camera but has an access door that allows battery changes without removing the bracket. As for fitting the contour of the camera, it does a good job but doesn’t quite fit exactly. If not tightened down you can get a little play if you torque the camera for some reason. WHen I have nothing better to do, I’ll probably put a strip of no slip in between bracket and camera to see if that solves it.

The side plate DOES interfere with the doors for HDMI/USB and Headphones if you have it adjusted all the way to the camera body. It can however be adjusted out and away from the camera by as much as one and a quarter inches or so by loosening a screw in the base (remove the screw and the side plate can be taken off). “Great, now I have to carry a tool around!” You say? No you don’t - it has an ingenious little screwdriver (looks like a deformed washer) that tucks into the base and appears to be held in place magnetically so the required tool is always at hand if you need to tighten it down or make adjustments while out and about. So far, I haven’t had any problems with it staying in place, but I would probably stick into my pocket or bag if I was out and about all day for fear of it getting bounced off and lost somewhere along the way.

For $69 I think it is a good deal. Much better than “generic” plates but not crazy expensive like the big names.

I got it at Adorama, but is probably available at BH Photo or Amazon as well.

I never get sick of a good dog. My dogs for the most part are not nearly as photogenic as the cat and one is quite camera shy.

I’ll have new material next month, going to Hawaii in a few weeks and the G9 is going to be my main camera. Expect lots of flowers, lava, and landscapes.

Yeah, defaults are not bad. I set up the overexposure zebra stripes to 105%. And you can still get detail out of the highlights, with a little bit of flashing going on. I "think" the stripes are set for single colour channel luminance, so they will flash even when you overload the blue channel say, with a lot of sky in your framing. It's only blue, no detail, so who cares if you blow it out a little to save some shadows? Very easy to pull back in post anyway, with most raw software.

You can set the "my menu" to pop up with a single push of the menu/set button. Just go to the "my menu setting" tab, then "display from my menu" choose "on", & whenever you hit menu, up pops your my menu settings. No matter what menu you where in previously.

I've set the focus box size adjustment to the control dial surrounding the menu/set button. No need to activate the AF, just twirl the dial at any time to resize the AF point. Utterly brilliant.

I've also got ISO, picture style, image stabilisation & iDynamic set to the 4 way directional buttons. The joystick does all the moving around in menus, & AF point movement much better, so the 4 way gets used for that instead. Yeah, ISO has its own dedicated button, I just find it quicker and easier to hit the arrow, & spin the surrounding dial. Or use the left/right arrow keys. Or the joystick. Your choice.

The 2 front function buttons on the other side of the lens release, I have set to flash enable/disable, & flash comp. You can then do all your flash adjustments/control with the camera up to your eye. Very very quick & intuitive.

I've got the front control wheel set to exposure comp in aperture mode. Quicker & easier than pressing the exposure comp button. I kinda missed the exposure comp dial on my GX8.

The camera is utterly brilliant for being able to shoot in nearly any scenario, change settings in radically different situations, without taking the camera from your eye, or diving into a single menu. I swear it feels like it was designed & built by real world photographers, rather than electronic engineers. Best designed, & executed camera I have ever laid my hands on. Something that seems to pop up a LOT in comments from those who have actually used one for more than 10 minutes.

My G9 arrived this afternoon.

Started playing around but had to stop to fully charge the battery.

I’ll get back at it tomorrow.

WOW!!! Can’t wait to give it a try.
