Love my local winter eagles

Not sure why they don't head south in winter, I guess there's enough food to keep them alive....

Thanks Al, yup they eagles here seem to find food when they need it, and I help them out in the dead of winter with mackerel I catch in season and freeze. I think they appreciate it when I nuke them to thaw them out. Yesterday one in the trees was watching as I pitched out a fish, and he was out of the tree before it hit the ice. I just stood there and watched, admiring him as he swooped down not 50 feet from me. My camera was in the car, but I didn't care, it was so much fun to see. And it makes me feel good that I am helping them through the tough part of the year.

Thanks Levina. Like Al said, it depends on their food supply. They don't follow a formal migration process like Osprey do. They tend more just to move around where food is readily available. Our eagles generally stay in Nova Scotia somewhere ever winter, moving to where they can get food. If there's any open water, I see more in my immediate area as their favourite food is fish, although they are true scavengers otherwise and will eat pretty much anything if they're hungry.

Love that second shot-what's going on with the feathers around the feet? One from the off-side leg blowing in front of the other? A feather shed and you clicked at exactly the right time? Whatever it is, I think it adds to the shot-gives a little something to think about.

The feather that covers the rear toe on the front foot in the photo. Never seen it happen that way in a picture. Thought just maybe a feather fell off and the picture was snapped at exactly the right time.

Great series, I like the one dumping the nest material for dinner!
