Hi all, I've just purchased the 80D and have noticed that the red AF boxes hardly light up when focus is achieved, especially outdoors in bright light. They do but they are faint.

This is even more obvious compared to my 60D where the AF confirmation indicators are a lovely vivid red when focus is locked.

I've fiddled with the settings, e.g. https://support.usa.canon.com …page=content&id=ART143026 (external link) and it happens in all AF modes, single, zone, large and 45 auto modes.

Is this normal and part of the new AF system of the 80D?

Cheers!

Yes, Canon has changed the appearance of the viewfinder in later models. They typically can vary the content of the information they show you quite a bit more, but the red light is not as intense as before.

Many thanks! Fears fully allayed!

I also popped in to LCE to test another one which was the same, and I also read the manual too!

"The AF points do not light up in red.

The AF points light up in red only when focus is achieved in low-light
conditions.

In Creative Zone modes, you can set whether to have the AF points
light up in red when focus is achieved (p.424)."

Cheers for the reply!

It is amazing how big these manuals can be! The 80D is a 526 page manual that is 20 MB as a pdf. Best to load it up because it is searchable with Adobe Acrobat.
