I rarely, RARELY print my photos, but would like to do more of it now. Thing is, when I go with printing I tend to just go to my local chain photo store, get a print, and then pick out a generic frame from another store - or maybe just one that's on sale.

I am not sure how to even go about picking print method/material or framing... except for all I've done - "in a dark frame" or "on stretched canvas". I've seen photos in recessed boxes, with white mattes, etc... but have never tried any myself.

Is there a guideline to pick what works best for a given size/style/color or is it really just choice?

I'd like to print this fairly large (it is a high res pano, though the edit isn't final) but have no clue how to go about picking the print/framing. Any help?

Hopefully others will respond to your questions because I am interested about this also.

I am in a similar situation where I want to get more of my photographs displayed in my home. There is a story attached to each one of them versus a store bought picture, print, whatever.

Personally, I like prints that are matted. The matting serves as another guide to lead the viewers eyes into the photo - kind of a looking glass if you understand what I am trying to convey.

A couple of things I have learned so far in my quest: Have the frame(s) compliment where you will have the work displayed. You don't want the frame to be the subject of interest. For example: In your posted photo, if you had a bright red frame, people would notice that instead of the landscape. Keep the frame subtle and allow the viewer to look into the the scene. Secondly, if you are going to mat the print, choose a mat that works with the overall color scheme of the print. There are so many to pick from you will be able to get one that blends from frame material into the print.

Good luck with what you decide.

I've done a few and two styles come to mind. First, I like the simple thin metal frames which come in various styles and colors and also an off-white or colored matte of your choice. Another route is to use a wider wooden frame with matte also. Yes, they should compliment the area they will be in. Glazing can be a regular picture glass, UV, or non-glare. Consider plexiglass which comes in the UV, etc. types also if you tend to move your pictures often.
