Anyone any idea how this works, what algorithm they use?

I look at it every day and have noticed recently that, especially near the bottom of the page, there are multiple images from the same poster(s).

I've had a few images of mine "Explored" but absolutely no logic to when/how they have been selected.

Selection certainly doesn't seem to be on image quality as there is a mix of stunning images, and some poor ones IMHO.

I never knew about the "Explore" page.

I just tried "flickr.com/explore" to find what I am guessing is what you are talking about....

Used to be based on a combo of Favorites, Comments and views.

How quickly a image accumulates Favs, Comments and views. Favs was the heaviest weight IIRC and you had to have comments.

Putting images in to lots of groups hurt Explore chances. Also, if all of the favs, comments, views come from your followers it didn't help.

There are articles on people gaming the system in the past and consistently getting an image in explore. Flickr changes the algorithm and then people figure out how to game that system. The cat and mouse game continues.

Well I'm impressed, Explore used to be such hot garbage years ago that I forgot all about it. Looking at the page now, the majority of it actually genuinely nice work.

edit: OK it falls apart a bit the further I scroll, I don't want to keep going for fear it will wind up looking like what I remember from 10 years ago.

That actually sounds exactly like Clouseau to me!

I have been "Explored" few times. And only with some film gear pictures. Like old Leica like (external link) picture. I think, it is personal choice of one nice to me person who is allowed to put images in the "explore".

I have seen where some photographers who deserved been "explored". But I have no interest to look into it. I like Flickr for been allowed to find and explore by myself. Yet, some of the photogs I like were in the "Explore" as well.

I don't think any one person is allowed to put images in to Explore, but it's basically a popularity contest. I've had some number of images in Explore in the past (on my old account) and when I used to pay more attention to it in the past I think it was basically a popularity content. Likes and comments rapidly piling on to a new image increased its chance of being explored, and I suspect a user with a lot of influence (popular, lots of explored images) liking or commenting on your image will carry more weight.

Not sure though, I used to be more interested in the algorithm years ago

I still don’t know Charles. What I do know is there are some pics appearing each day with very few views, favs, or comments, which sort of does away with the “popular” theory.

Think I’m going to have to ask Flickr directly, or google it.

Why don't you also ask how they choose whose photos appear on their home page as well!
