We recently moved to a smaller house now our nest is empty & my back yard opens out into a 50 acre nature center that has abundant wildlife in the middle of the Dallas/Ft Worth Metro area. I've noticed a red shouldered hawk several times while looking through the windows but never had a chance to capture until a few days ago. I let the dogs out in the back yard & he/she was on the portico & flew over to a small tree right at the fence line. He didn't seem skittish so I put the dogs in the house & grabbed my 1DMV w/ 70-200 USM IS II. It was a nice, sunny day with the sun at my back and I was able to walk to 20 yards of the tree. The limb he was on was only about 25 ft high with no obstructions. It was as if he was posing for me as I shot and, for the rank amateur that I am, was very pleased with the results.
