Who has replaced 24-105 v.i and with what?

Sold the 24-105 v1 in anticipation of a better v2.....won't do that again(sell something based on rumours). Had the 24-70 2.8 II and didn't replace the 24-105 v1. Just use the 24-70 II more.

i have thought about this question quite a bit for my own kit.

IMO, the only worthwhile replacement is a 24-70 2.8 II or maybe one of the newest third party versions of the 24-70 2.8.


that said, I have the tokina 16-28 2.8 and the sigma 35 1.4 A for most wide shots where the 24-105 suffers. The 24-105 is my hiking and flash-assist event lens. It's a decent lens and for the current used asking price is a bargain.

My vote is for the 24-105ii. Best imperfect lens.

I replaced mine with the 24-70 f/2.8 L II lens. Remarkable upgrade in IQ, but with the added cost of weight (not to mention $$$), and lack of IS. Love the colors/contrast, and incredible sharpness of the 24-70!

Surely the biggest issue when replacing any 24-105 with any 24-70 is the loss of the 70-105mm range! For me, that's essential in an everyday or travel lens, even though I have a 70-200, as it means fewer lens changes. I tried a 24-70 and found the need to change lenses just to get to say 100mm really annoying. For most travel photography, especially in a city, I can leave the 70-200 behind. I can also shoot portraits at 105mm.

I've had the 24-105 v1 for several years, and mostly very happy with it. I have just replaced it with the v2. Optically the v2 is a little better (on a 5D4), especially at the edges at 24mm, but the IS is noticeably better, and the AF seems quicker. It's a bit heavier than the v1, but a 5D4 with any zoom lens is not a lightweight camera to begin with. On the v1 I had really annoying zoom creep which was a pain when using on a tripod if pointing up or down.

I do have the 24-70 f4 L IS and it's a fine lens, though it lacks the range I need. I have no experience of the Tamron 24-70 or other 3rd party lenses, and have generally avoided them as they so often end up needing updates, and the resale value is definitely less! Like you I also have primes in this range, and use them when I'm spending time doing "slow" photography - on a location, tripod mounted etc, or when I need the wider aperture.

It's important not to be carried away with reading lens test reports, try to find a real-world user test which gives you an opinion from a photographer who has actually used it to take photographs over an extended period, preferably your kind of photographs. Very few actual user opinions out there for the 24-105v2 as yet.
