I'm interested to see how this lens performs. It is a bit heavier than the Canon but should be cheaper.

The performance comparisons should be interesting. The Canon 70-200 f/4L IS USM is a great lens, but it's a 12-year old optical design. The independents have been moving into the high-end lens space for the past few years, and they've definitely shown themselves capable of giving Canon a run for their money.

That is one BUTT-UGLY lens. It is also a bit on the expensive side for consumer upgrade. The Canon 70-300 IS USM is available refurbished for less than half the cost.

True. But meaningless for most applications. My 80D has several modes which will choose appropriate shutter speeds and ISOs. On a camera that I can shoot JPG at 12,800 one-stop of aperture is really close to irrelevant. I do realize some folks demand constant aperture zooms. Which is completely understandable if one is shooting an all manual camera.

but by that reply the Canon 70-200 f4 is a useless piece of glass as well?

I sold my Canon 70-200/4L IS last summer to buy a Sigma 100-400 because I wanted more reach for airshows. One downside (IMO) to the Canon that I didn't appreciate until I had the Sigma, is that the Canon f/4L has the zoom ring near the center of the lens and the MF ring near the end. For hand-held action shots. that meant that my hands were close together, with my right hand holding the body and my left hand holding the zoom ring near the center of the lens.

This new Tamron lens has the zoom ring near the end of the lens. For hand-held action shots, this means you have a hand at both ends of the lens, which (again, IMO) is a more stable configuration.

It's good to see the independents offering lower cost alternatives to the high-end Canon glass. More competition is always good for the consumer.

Canon is offering lower cost alternatives to the high-end Canon glass. The new 70-300 II nano-USM very nearly matches the EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM for image quality. If there is a difference in AF speed/accuracy between the 70-300 II and the 70-200, the II is better.

Both of Canon's new nano-USM lenses focus quickly enough to be used for field sports/athletics. How about the new Tamron?
