Focus broken on 50/1,4

So, I took out my 50/1,4 that I haven't used for a while (Yes this by it self is a sin!).

Tried to focus and it didn't focus. I can gear the motor, but the focus is not moving.
I also tried switching between manual / auto focus and moving the focus ring manually, still nothing. (Indicator stuck almost by the infinity mark).

Is this worth repairing?
Is there anything I can try myself?


Or is this just a good reason to invest in a The 50/1,2 or Sigma Art?

Common problem... More than likely, some pressure was put on the front element and warped the internal focus frame (prob not the correct name).

Several DIY tutorials on repairing the ring on YouTube. Probably not worth the price to send it to Canon or a repair shop.

Fix it yourself, patience and watch videos, if it still doesn't work at least you tried! I have fixed a few myself.

Taken it apart and adjusted. Cant really get it right at this point.

The "last" part is ok, running smoothly.

It is when I put in the white plastic guideparts that it starts getting hard to turn the focus.

Any ideas?

That aluminum chassis that the guides run in are still not true or uniform. Those cams should slide easily through the tracks.

The slots in the aluminum housing get distorted with bumps to the lens. You have to gently bend it all back so that gap is uniform throughout. When the plastic guides slide smoothly anywhere in the slot with little or no slop, you are done and can reassemble. I wound up putting mine on the flat surface of my drill press. I put a piece of flat stock on top of the aluminum barrel and used the chuck pressure against it to make the surface flat again. This made the slots uniform.

Those 2 small screws hold the electrical contact block to the mount.

Is it fixed?

Just an FYI. I loaned my 50/ 1.4 lens to my sister who soon after tripped and fell, hitting the lens on the ground. The focus ring was very stiff and had a "grindy" feeling.
She sent it to Canon and they fixed it for $125. Didn't seem too unreasonable.

No, tried two times but seems to need more love.

Got a Sigma 50/1,4 instead...will sell the other one (located in Sweden) to anyone interested.
