So I found the trick to getting a good pic of my camera shy Aussie “Sheila”.

(For context)...

She is a total mooch when it comes to chips and as I was snacking I noticed I had her undivided attention so I decided to try and “bribe” her to pose. It seemed to work, but introduced another problem when it comes to timing the shot...

FINALLY got a chance to test the camera outdoors and in various "real world" usage situations since the weather warmed up quite a bit. I was just floored at how easy the camera is to use. For my own personal use, I found there to be very little difference in how fast it is to use compared to my old 60D. The size and weight difference is night and day. Having HDR built in is a real joy, and the amount of features is just mind boggling. I never thought I'd say it, but the touchscreen is fun to use, and really is a massive quality of life upgrade over any DSLR I've ever owned. The image quality too is very, very good, even with the 15-45. I don't 100% things anymore, I stopped caring about image quality on pixel peeping levels eons ago (I've learned to judge on quality based on how the video or photo will be viewed), but I used ISO 2000 without worry, and hardly noticed any noise, even in shadows.

This camera dances circles around any camera I've used to this point (and that includes shooting a film on a 5D3) in pure fun and the "I can't wait to use this" factor.

There are many that think the M series is dead with the EOS R and RP being out in the world. I think the opposite. The M50 is an APS C version of the EOS R and with just some improvements here and there, could very be the mirrorless replacement for the Rebel series.

It is well beyond the SL2 in versatility, and borders perhaps a bit on the 80D even. AF needs to be improved, and battery life needs to be better. Do those two things, and the M50 successor would be a wonderful travel and APSC body.

Now if you want some more fun... try getting the Viltrox .71x M booster for $160. Then couple it with some of your favorite EF lenses and see what you think. I am quite sure you are going to feel like you have a mini EOS R. ;) Let's just say that the only thing that the EOS R would have over such a combination would be the RF mount, a better AF system (or at least more profile-able one), and much longer battery life.

It’s the best APS-C camera Canon currently offers. I eventually sold mine as I found it inconvenient for hybrid photo/video use w/o custom presets. I will consider a more advanced model if it comes out with more controls and dpaf in 4k. After getting used to 5div output, it’s hard to be satisfied with M50 in low light.

Yes a couple of custom mode slots would be invaluable with that camera. It is a bit more tedious IMO to change settings, etc so being able to store two most common baselines would be very handy.

I think the best thing Canon could do if they really want the M series to take off would be aoffer a couple of faster lens option in the native mount.

15-45mm is f/6.3
11-22mm is f/5.6

No reason those lenses can’t be f/2.8-f/4 without adding too much bulk or cost. Personally, I believe that is the greates reason the M didn’t take off when first introduced.

Sure, the 22mm is f/2 and they have now released a couple of other primes. Meanwhile third party makers have a bevy of 1.8-2.8 offerings (albeit with MF). They doomed the M to red-headed step-child status by failing to make native lenses beyond economy class.

Having to use EF-S or EF lenses with an adapter really takes away from the convenience of size/weight possibilities.

I hope the M series thrives too. When I picked up the M50 with kit lens, it felt pretty much at the limit from what I could comfortably handhold for any prolonged period of time. The R series, if they're just slightly smaller versions of FF lenses, would likely be way too heavy to use normally. The M series lenses really are nice, since we're not forced into FF lens territory.

That sounds like a fun setup!

Personally, just making the 15-45 f/5.6 at the tele end would be nice. I know it's only a third of a stop, but if any of the 17-50/5 f/2.8 lenses are any indication, that's just two heavy for a zoom lens with an M50 IMO. The 2.8-4 idea is nice, though. Fuji seems to have kept theirs nice and light (somehow).

The 100L plus booster gives me a 70mm f2 portrait lens. Works pretty well I think.

Quick chess shot with the same configuration, but DOF is way too thin.

Thought this belongs here:

https://www.pdnonline.com …olor-reproduction-ranked/ (external link)

I am unfamiliar with the source, but it's pretty cool to see that the M50 beats the EOS R on color reproduction. It would be nice to see what lens they tested it with, though.

I gave my M50 a decent workout on a recent trip to the Florida Keys. We made a similar trip last winter, and that time I brought my full size kit of 5D3, 7D2, 24-105L, 16-35 f/4 L and 100-400L II, all of which fit in a medium size backpack. This time I decided to travel light, so only brought along the M50 and four EF-M lenses (11-22mm, 15-45mm, 55-200mm and 22mm f/2 pancake), all of which fit in a rather small shoulder bag. It was liberating walking through the airport with such a light bag, as well as walking around the Keys with the small, light M50 attached to my belt with the Spider Black Widow Holster (external link). I usually walked around with either the 11-22mm or 15-45mm lens attached to the body, while my wife carried the other lens in her purse. In the evening, I would stick the 22mm pancake in my cargo shorts pocket.

Here are a few sunset shots from the trip:
