What Would You Do?

I was out on my own in the Forest of Dean (UK) in the middle of nowhere looking for hawfinches to photograph, trotting towards me was a huge wild boar. I didn't expect it or have time to think. The first time I've ever seen one. My initial response with a camera in my hand was to take a picture. I believe I made the right choice of one of the 5 above.

But, unfortunately, none of your 5 choices speak of taking a picture. . So yes, you made the right choice, but your choice is not included amongst the 5 options you gave us to choose from. . I find it unusual that, this being a photography forum, none of the poll options include anything about photographing the boar ....... which, of course, is what most of us here would do.


I would quickly get down on the ground prone, so as to shoot it from the lowest position possible (it doesn't look like simply kneeling would be low enough). . Then I'd move my active autofocus point way off center (as it looks like the OP did). . Then I'd get that AF point on the boar's forehead and start shooting away, zooming out as he approaches, hoping to get a few perfect frames before the angle became too acute for a successful composition.

Run like a girl screaming at the top of my lungs .......lol OK No..I would have been on Toms right causing him to lean real heavy on his buffer.. Just as I lean on mine.
O and I hope they fix that problem with the 7DIII. unlimited raw would be nice.

I pick six... lay down in the hogs path shooting at a slightly upward angle as the pig chooses its left or right arch around me.

Looks a little on the small side..........still could give you a nasty graze though.

THESE are the ones to look out for, and you definitely want/need a big enough TREE CLOSE BY or a serious stopping machine!!

When Cousins said "huge wild boar", that is what I was thinking it was - an honestly huge boar about the size of yours. . But to me it does look much smaller than yours.

Who knows? . Maybe Cousin's boar really is huge, and it's just the angle that makes it look smallish.

Tom, it could be. If that was the case, then I change my selection to "RUN LIKE HELL" & "LOOK FOR A TREE TO CLIMB"!!!

Butts boar is a monster, my boar was about the size of an overweight Alsatian dog but it was moving fast.

PC, then still big enough to be very wary of.

All this reminds me of an incident I experienced in the bush in Kenya some years ago although I never saw from what I was fleeing ! We were in thick scrub and bushes about shoulder height. The persons I was with realised that there were some rhino in the immediate vicinity although we could not see them. Suddenly there was an 'explosion' of yelling and we fled, having spooked at least one rhino. I tripped over a fallen branch of acacia tree on the ground and the noise of the animal went by me. I got up and went into a nearby tree. Everything quietened down and I looked down and realised that I was only about three feet off the ground in this 'supposed' tree that would not have given me any protection at all. I spent time later removing several acacia thorns from a leg. It obviously makes a great difference if you can see what your danger is and hope that you can avoid it in some way !
