I'm looking to replace my canon 5diii, 1dxii, and olympus em5ii with Sony's A9 and A7iii. Even after reading and watching all the GREAT things about Sony's latest bodies, I'm still a bit afraid that I'll miss the quality, performance, and reliability of my canons.

I feel the same way but the A7III has me re-thinking it. I was going to get a 5d4 over the holidays but then I tried an 7rII and I liked it and I seriously considered moving to an 7R3 but for me 24mp is more than enough so now I'm leaning toward this.

Overall I'm happy with my current stuff so I'm not in any hurry but this has moved to the top of my list. So many choices these days.

It is interesting how the impact of Canon's decisions with the latest releases has caused some of us diehards to at least consider switching, even if we don't. This is the first time I have seen many staunch Canon shooters consider switching, and the scene is the same on FM, DPReview, etc. This is going to put Sony very close to Canon, if not overtake them, at this pace. Between market share erosion of the D850 and now the a7r3, a73, and a9, and all Canon has released in the last year were some lackluster rebels, and the 6D2, it is going to be tough to keep their lead.

I think for my sports shooting, I would be better off with the A9, but I cannot afford to get that now to transition fully to it. :(

I would have to get the a7iii, then later sell all other items off, and the a7iii to move to the a9. Baby steps! Our LLC is going to have to see some revenue to get this ball rolling though.

If you can’t get great sports shots with the D500, I’m not sure what else would improve your shooting. I know a guy who started with a T2i and now covers big leagues just fine with less gear than most people here.

Completely depends on the sports, proximity, level of expectation, etc. Up to this point, before the a9, AF systems of even DSLRs, other than the 1D/5D/7D series couldn't keep up with the action. To say that one should be able to shoot sports with lesser cameras then means that the types of shots and action are restricted to the easier elements of said sports.

Not sure where the D500 came from? I am only interested in the A73, A7R3 or A9. Nothing else in Canon's lineup will even come close to shooting the sports action I am. The 5D4 does great, the 7D2 does as well, so the Sony equivalent to these would be all I am interested in.

I’m thinking about jumping on the a9. Seeing good deals on FM buy/sell that have probably been triggered by the a7 III announcement.

Teamspeed what lens/lenses do you rely on in your sport shoots?

I'm pretty excited to pre-order this camera. As a wedding photographer and canon shooter, there were starting to be too many features to ignore with Sony. I think the A7iii finally tipped the scales! Stoked to share some images when I get everything switched over from Canon!

I thought your point was sports shooters were switching because 7DII, 5D4, 1DXII weren’t good enough.

No I said many were switching, then went on to discuss my particular dilemma, both mutually exclusive.

I use the 24-70II and 70-200II exclusively for sports. During outdoor daytime shooting, like softball (league and high school), the Sigma 150-600 will make an appearance, although I have been starting to just take my 2x III with me and put it on the 70-200 as well, with pretty good results.

2 of the 3 Ls in the left side of the frame are my go-to for sports. I shudder to think what I will have to go through to switch, but since Canon hasn't yet come out with any level of DSLR that has the 1D AF system, high resolution close to the 5D4, and at least 10fps with really fast dual cards, I am left looking at other options. I don't want to switch to another brand of DSLR, if I am making a switch, why not shrink the overall kit size a bit? At least I have moved away from all Canon lighting and now sport all Godox equipment, so the only switch there is the Xpro.

I like this collection as is, but my desired results are a bit lacking at this time due to lack of gear capability.

The camera and lens combination I hate absolutely the most is the one I shot this photo with... -? (I totally dislike iPhones, and wish I could switch back to the Samsung S7/S8)

Ah nice. So in other words Sony’s got all the glass you’d need to make a complete switch. Was just curious what yor needs are as some sports shooters are waiting for Sony to roll out the super teles.

Have you already checked out Patrick Murphy’s YT channel?

Eye AF is just icing the cake if I can get 24Mpx and 10+ fps. :)

Interesting about the carrying of 1 battery in the grip instead of 2. Doesn't bother me though with 2. Already have the Manfrotto variable friction arm, stainless straps and rubber suspension, super clamp, etc. I have the RF605 YN remotes too for remote firing shutters on other cameras as I shoot my camera. So I have all the components, just haven't received permission yet.

Some awesome things in that video. I may have to tape my remote to my lens, that is a great idea, and I may also pick up a floor tripod to run a camera from down low. Thanks for that, it was very helpful, and not even the part where he chooses the A9. :)

I wouldn’t say I’m a die hard Canon user and certainly not a professional, but Canon is all I’ve ever owned and I’ve never had any real complaint. That being said, I’m switching for two reasons:
1) I’ve wanted a smaller body for a while and I don’t trust that when Canon comes out with a mirrorless full frame it won’t be a disappointment
2) the Sony A73 is more than I expected and meets all my wants

As a bonus, my favorite lens (50 1.2) actually focuses more consistently on Sony with an adapter than on my Canon.

If you are ok with Sony colors, AWB, post processing workflow, menu system and ergonomics then there is no reason to hang on to Canon. Sony now has most important lenses and many canon lenses work well with adapter.
I never appreciated canon 5div more than after I tried Sony system with A7rii for a couple of weeks - it was not a good experience for me, basically a beta product with inferior awb, substandard color reproduction, battery life, AF system, no touch focus, ineffective ibis, and possibly the worst user interface in the entire industry. Now, A7iii may have addressed many of these issues and I definately keep an eye on sony which I beleive will become #1 FF by unit sale in the US by the end of 2018. They seem to be listening to customers. More importantly, they are betting big time on FF format which I strongly beleive is the future and crop sensors belong only in smartphones. Canon will be fine whereas Nikon is a decade behind in video AF, video lenses, IS, etc. Sony will easily take over Nikon’s entire use-base no sweat; they already have better lenses. Nikon can’t do a thing without Sony sensors whereas Canon is the only other FF sensor manufacturer and the only dual pixel FF sensor manufacturer in the world.

Are you getting two A7III’s? If not, why not get one or two 1DX’s used for the money lost switching?

The 5D4 beats out the 1DX, there is no reason to get the 1DX. Canon doesn't offer what I want or need at this time. The 5D4 is great, one of the best cameras Canon has made to date, but it has shortcomings. The 1DX2 has other shortcomings. Put the two together, and I would be close.

I won't be out that much money. I always try to get my gear at the lowest prices I can. I have had the 5D4 for almost 2 years now, and paid then what people are paying new on sale now. Ditto with the 7D2. What I would be out would be akin to having rented the 5D4 for $250 each year. Not bad in my book.

The first round of changes would be the sale of the 7D2 and SL2, and a couple of lenses, the older ones that I don't use often. Not sure which I would look at, whether the a7r3 or the a73. Once I get closer to making a move this summer or late spring, I will know better.
