should say "globe"...its a frosted half dome that attaches directly to the flash in place of standard reflector. Light spread is very even...esp like using it with a shoot thru umbrella.

Right on! It used to be that softboxes did not exist, and all photography was lit with 'vitual point source' lights that obeyed the Inverse Square law. A significant aspect to learning 'lighting' was to learn how PLACEMENT of light sources could flatter or make scary looking faces. And how DISTANCE altered contrast of the lighting of the subject. Constant source lights permitted pre-visualization of the effects of light placement. (Later, modelling lights did what constant source lights did, for seeing in advance what the higher intensity flash sources would do.)

Now there is an almost automatic tendency to throw a light source into a softbox without understanding much if any of the above. And speedlights permit no pre-visualization...you have to shoot and chimp to see what happens.

When I would teach lighting to someone in the past, I would have them use two desklamps with standard reflectors, to learn placement and contrast adjustment. Only after mastering that, would I introduce somewhat small panel reflectors, and finally after panel reflectors did the softbox get pulled out. Instead, folks today often buy modifiers with little understanding.
