GOES-S follows GOES-R in the next generation of NOAA weather satellites. GOES-R has already entered operational service as GOES-16/GOES-East, where it brought the high-resolution, high frequency images you likely saw during the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season. GOES-S, the second in the four-satellite series, will become GOES-17/GOES-West, providing similar coverage for the western US and Pacific.

You can see near-realtime imagery from GOES-East here (external link).

The launch vehicle was a United Launch Alliance Atlas V with four solid rocket boosters.

(Here's how the setup used in the above shot fared)

Gotta say, I never get tired of these. Great work as usual.

Not sure why, but call me JJ.

Wonderful shots! You really have a knack for the dramatic moments of a launch.

One quick question, if I may? Whats the legend about the hand-print in the concrete? Is it some-one famous or just an over-looked mistake when it was poured? :)

How many cameras have you lost (melted/roasted) over the years of your epic shooting of launches Mike?

I'm not sure what the story is with the hand print. It has no other markings near it. I'll try to ask about it next time, but since this pad dates back to the Titan program, it's entirely possible nobody still around knows.

I haven't lost any cameras to date. Lenses, on the other hand...
