I would've backed up, but was shooting through an open bathroom window. The range was 25' and the image is cropped only slightly for aesthetics.

Thank you, Nancy, though I believe I’ve been hated by people far more nefarious than yourself. Do your worst! LOL

Al, the statement Nancy made sure seemed harsh, at first, but hey, this just isn't fair!!
Beautiful shot. Someday, maybe someday I'll get a good shot of one of these guys.

Thank you all for your enthusiastic comments. Likes are ok, but I thrive on the written word. We’ve had as many as four in the yard at once, in years past. I’ve never had much problem approaching them; like most woodpeckers, they seem most trusting. They are a nifty bird and I’ve been able to watch them excavate a cavity at close range several times.

From your bathroom-my imagination runs rampant; four at once-my jealousy runs rampant; and shots like this-my admiration is boundless!:-D

The Pileated is very skittish. For this portrait, the word awesome clearly applies!

Thank you most kindly, John. For the most part though, I have found them very approachable, almost to the point of being oblivious of my presence.
