Canon 500 4.5 Manual HELP

I purchased this lens recently. The tripod collar was broken and it did not have a manual. So far the lens seems to work perfectly. I am trying to find a manual so that I can figure out how to get the max out of the lens. Does someone have and can post or know where I can find a downloadable manual.

The manual at the link I provided may still be useful. These long lenses all had very similar features. Also check the thread at http://www.fredmiranda​.com/forum/topic/54297​3 for details about a "pre focus" feature.

The manual you buy, take note from the small jpg of its cover, covers six lenses, one of which is the 600mm. You can download it at https://www.usa.canon.​com …m-f-4l-is-usm?tab=manuals and probably have all you need.

The OP is looking for a manual for the FD 500 4.5, not any EF lens.

Hmmm, I don't see any mention of FD by the OP.

I stand corrected. However, it is still the 4.5 and not the 4.0 that some others keep referring to.

Yes the 4.5 is the manual that I am looking for. I ordered one because I could not find it anywhere, I just want to know the ins and the outs of the lens. I have decided to leave it at home this trip and not take it to FL. I want more field time with it before I actually take it on a trip. For this trip I'll stick to the Sigma 150-600C as I am more familiar with it and dont want to be frustrated while out....

I would take it with you personally.

I find the "Big Whites" are remarkably easy to use with little learning involved in my experience. I have made two cock-ups with long lenses - one was the focus limiter. You can imagine my sense of humor failure when I had the opportunity to get an Otter swimming on it's back at 6 to 10 meters away and looking me straight in the eye, even looked like he was grinning at me (did he know something????). My focus limiter was set from 15.8 meters to infinity = ARRGH!!!! The other one was the length of time it took me to find out how IS interferes with AF, however you don't have IS so no worries there.

Until you get used to using your new toy just keep the shutter speed above 1/500 sec and remember that you don't have much depth of field - but you will already know this from your Sigma. After a bit of practice you will be able to use lower shutter speeds (1/250 maybe 1/160), naturally if you are not using it hand held then it is the subject that determines the shutter speed.

What seems to have been lost by the OP is that the manual for purchase covers six lenses (see list below), one of which is the EF 500mm f/4.5. But the same exact manual will be supplied for all six, several of which Canon will supply for free. The 600mm f/4 is available at https://www.usa.canon.​com …m-f-4l-is-usm?tab=manuals for instance. So download the free version and take the lens with you! There are plenty of bald eagles in Florida, all waiting for their pictures to be taken.
