Canon EF 400 f4 DO IS USM on a 7D

I'm considering a Canon EF 400 f4 DO IS USM for my 7D. I like to shoot birds (spoonbills and wading birds) and sports (football-- under the lights of varying quality), basketball, triathlons, bicycling, running). I use my Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS (with a 1.4 when I need more focal length). Wondering if this my best choice. I like to shoot handheld.

I would think you would want something that zooms so that you can still shoot as the action (or birds) move closer to you. Doesn't canon make a 100-400 lens? Or maybe the Sigma 150-600?

The 400 DO is a specialist lens. . Because you shoot such a variety of things, I don't see how the 400 DO would be a good choice at all.

As Paul suggested, the 100-400mm seems like it would be a much more useful lens for the things you shoot. . Canon's newer 100-400mm, commonly referred to as the V2 or version 2, is an excellent lens in all respects - much better than its predecessor.

By the way, since your question is not about nature and landscapes and there are no photos being shared, it may get more pertinent responses if it were in another part of the forum, such as the Sports Talk, Bird Talk, or Canon EF and EF-S Lenses sections.
