The famous photographer may have intended to head off inquiries from males by advertising for an assistant who would "occasionally model." Of course, men model too, but that part looks like a hint.

Shoot. I'd model for him. He's traveling Europe, USA, and a bunch of other places I would love to see. His YouTube would really take a hit if I was the model though.

In a similar note, you'll notice the person waking up in the tent or perched on the rock in Instagram photos usually isn't a guy. Myself I usually hike alone so i just bring a mannequin ;)

Because if you are male, and the bride wants "getting ready" images, they don't always feel comfortable so they will sometimes request a female shooter (mine do)...so its much easier to simply have your second shooter be a different gender...

It's unusual frank and honest. In many countries it is not legal to announce such preference (gender, age, ethnicity) openly. However, it is done anyway. Ever walked in a restaurant (e.g. in the US) and the customer facing staff are only attractive young women with long hair or all asian (but then all Mexican in the kitchen....). It's about fulfilling your customers (perceived) preferences....

Affirmative action -- in the USA, we REWARD people for being racist.

In the US it's not legal in corporations, but this is most likely a contracted type position. I see it all the time in this industry though. Many times I see photographers asking for second shooters who must be a certain gender. I find that very odd as well. Myself personally, skill with a camera is all I care about when hiring a second.

Male photographer with female assistant -- it takes pressure off whoever you're working with. She's (client/model) surrounded not by two men who could hurt her, but by one man and an ally (a woman). It's especially relevant for glamour and such.
