Canon 50/1,4 vs Sigma 50/1,4 (va Canon 50/1,2)

So I started as many others with the 50/1,8 many years ago. Loved it but build quality was...well..not good. It broke at some point.

Bought a Canon 50/1,4 instead. I've had that for a couple of years now.
Though there was an accident. It was in a camera bag that fell to the flor. Now no more focus in it.
(I'v looked at a couple of Youtube videos but it seems like mine is more banged up than that.)

So now I'm looking at replacing the broken one.

So I could just go for a new Canon 50/1,4.
But for just about 200-250 USD (but in Swedish Kronor) I can get the Sigma 50/1,4.
This seems like its a lot sharper (especially at wide open), a LOT faster in auto focusing and WAY better build quality.

The only downside that I can see is that it is SO much bigger (and heavier). Iäve used my 50mm when I wanted just something "small and easy" sometimes.

So any thoughts about this?

Anyone made the switch? Regretting it? Loving it?


(and perhaps we should also throw in the Canon 50/1,2?)

I have the Sigma 50 1.4 and its a very nice lens. I had to send it to Sigma to get calibrated because it was inconstant and microadjust didnt help. After I got it back its very accurate and reliable in AF area and its plenty sharp unless you enjoy pixel peeping. honestly though if i didnt have a 50mm and wanted one I would just get the new Canon 50 1.8STM. I have owned that lens as well. Build quality is SOO much better then the old 1.8. It feels like decent quality in your hand. its very sharp wide open and focus is fast enough, not like shoot much sports with it. Plus its much cheaper then either the Sigma or Canon 1.4. and if it was a free choice between Canon 1.8 STM and the canon 1.4 I would take the 1.8 everytime
