Challenge #681: Something Old

This week’s topic is Something Old. What age qualifies a thing as “old” depends, of course, on what the thing is. Please, no images of people or pets unless they just happen to be in the scene with your main subject.

Remember, if you post a photo, you may be the winner. Be prepared to host and judge a new challenge.

To submit, click POST TO THREAD and put your photo title in the first line of the post. Don't forget your camera model.

Post until Monday noon GMT, 19 March 2018.

Photo Submissions

1. Camera -- Canon G-Series Camera G1, G2, G3, G5, G6, G7, G9, G10, G11, G12, G15, G16, G1X, G1X Mark II and Pro1 only.
   
   
2. Time -- Any on-topic photo taken at any time is eligible, although photos that have won other competitions should NOT be entered.
   
   
3. Size -- Photo must be no less than 800 pixels and no more than 1600 pixels on the longest side, with NO BORDERS.
   
   
4. Post-Processing -- Do whatever you like and the host will decide if it works.
   
   
5. Posting --
   
   • One photo per photographer in each challenge.
     
   • Photo title in the message subject line.
     
   • Camera model.
     
   • EXIF data, if you like.
     
   
   
6. Commenting -- No commenting on photos by anyone, including the photographer. Once the winners are declared, photographers can add comments to their images and everyone is invited to discuss.
   
   
7. Photo Display -- Photos must appear in this thread to be eligible.

RESULTS

It was a bit of a surprise that every oldie chosen was a building. Nothing wrong with that, though; I simply expected more variety. Now for the five entries:

Trumper, "Old and Newer": A peaceful, calming scene, what with the cool colors and the predominantly horizontal shapes. Your presentation makes me think I'd like to walk there.

tcphoto1, "A local Antebellum shot": This looks like another nice place for a stroll. Unfortunately, at 648 x 486 pixels, the image doesn't meet the requirement of being at least 800 px on the longest side.

Stiga, "Fair Maid's House, Perth (1475)": In great shape for a 500+-year-old building, isn't it? I like the way this image conveys the three-dimensionality of the architecture and suggests the changing light.

Jim Askew, "Old (Very) House!": I'd like to visit this charming and rustic spot, too, but at 598 px, the longest side isn't long enough.

Maureen Souza, "114 Year Old Fox Theater": Europeans may be laughing at Americans because our "old" buildings are new by their standards. This is old for a movie theater. Maybe it began as a live-performance theater? The image effectively gives the feeling of a historic part of a California town. One quibble: I think a different time of day would have flattered the "model" more.

So there are three to choose from. I'm sorry I didn't PM tcphoto and Jim and invite them to resubmit. The truth is, I didn't notice the sizes until this morning. A family medical issue had my attention through most of last week.

I was also surprised that all the entries were buildings. Our Fox theater is still used for live performances. We have seen Judy Collins, Christopher Cross, REO Speedwagon, Heart as well as our local symphony many times there. When it was renovated 20 years ago we purchased front row balcony seats and they have our names on them. My excuse is that now that my Pro1 has died, I am limited to my archives. I have a cello here that is 138 years old but could not photograph it.

I guess buildings are the main idea ,in the UK up until about the 1920's most houses were old [what do you class as old? ).We have since then started building and building.The majority of houses in the UK are 100 + years old .

My house, built in 1910, I'd call old. Most in this neighborhood are 1920s or later. What's old depends on where you are. Parts of the country that were settled earlier, like New England and the South, have more genuinely old houses. The 1906 earthquake destroyed many buildings in the Bay Area, creating a big need for new construction during the few years after that.

There were challenges in three different forums this week that tempted me: "Old", "Imperfections" and "Legs". I considered taking the same shot of my own legs with three different cameras to qualify for each but, luckily for all, I decided against it.

Oh, Teekay.....I thought about a selfie too.

I will be out next week...we are off to Florida this Friday for a wedding, then a couple of days in the Everglades.
