Final moment before switch

Sold the 200L... now I'm in that final moment... complete silence has taken over me. My senses are numb... can't hear... can't feel.

is this how it feels before you finally leave Canon?

please speak up... I cannot hear well right now.

I sold my Canon gear last year, and when my beloved Canon 7D was officially bought my heart dropped. It went overseas with me and took so many of my favorite pictures. I still miss it

I remember taking the 5D3 to Japan with the 15-30 Tamron and 24-70 Tamron.

I don't miss any of those heavy beasts lol.

Talley I played with a bunch of G master zooms at the demo. Sorry but you did not escape heavy glass.

I realize I will still be haunted by heavy glass with Sony so I will keep my Fuji for small form factor. I will keep canon around too.

I will take a while to warm up to Sony.

You could just man up and keep the old gear. Why not have the best of both worlds?

If you changed over because of weight I doubt you will notice the difference. I have been looking as well and here's what I found comparing a kit with one body (5DIV vs A7RIII), a 16-35/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8. Yes, I'm a zoom guy and a 2.8 guy as well. I have no idea how this would turn out if you were ok with f4 zooms.

The Canon kit weighs in at 8.55 pounds and costs about 9,000 at B&H today.

The Sony kit weighs in at 8.11 pounds and costs about 10,600 at B&H today.

If you switch the zooms out for say Sigma primes, no matter what you buy the cost will be $300 more for Sony and the weight will be .36 pounds less.

You have to believe that the Sony camera will give you better photos to make the switch. For me, and perhaps many of us, any camera made in the last couple of years has more capabilities than I have skills so I have decided not to switch at this time.

nonono... it depends on the glass man. Specifically that 15-30 was awesome... all 2.5lbs worth! 85 1.4 G is 29oz vs my 85A which is 40oz... pretty good difference.

Sony's F4 stuff is pretty light.

Exactly... There is a few reasons I switched... weight is far down on the list.

The next weekend will tell me a whole lot more. Got a 70-200 G and 85 G coming. I'll see how the performance is. Could be a make or break kind of test.

LOL!!! As if your going to be using f/4 lenses much.........

Talley you don't have to convince me about Sony as I'm quite impressed and will buy into it very soon.

The G master 85 f/1.4 is actually very comfortable in weight and agile in the hand when I tested it with the A7iii. I will admit the A9 with battery grip I also tested it with felt chunky but manageable.

The Sony 16-35 f/4 is actually such a semi compact combo that I'd like to test out but knowing me I'd really "need" the Gmaster 16-35 f/2.8.

So if your dumping Canon it's logical for you to buy the A9 as I find it hard to believe you'll need to go beyond that type of performance as it's a beast.

You will be a Sony POTN spokes person to tell canon users to switch :P Just pok'n fun........

I think it's exciting time as you get new hardware.

When I sold all three of my Canon full frames, I had a few moments where I paused and wondered if anything would feel as comfortable, at home, and do as I commanded without thinking about it.

I got over that real quick. I don't miss them at all. I really enjoy my smaller mirrorless kit (Fuji) for what I do with it.

I still have a few Canons, but they're not my every day, one is for astrophotography and the other is a 1D series body for when I'm birding. Everything else, I'm much happier day to day for everything with my pair of Fujis.

The size difference and silence is what really won me over. I almost went with a Sony, but ultimately chose not to for budget reasons (I almost fell back into the full frame thing and the glass... ugh). But ultimately I didn't and I'm happy I didn't. Part of my joy of shooting day to day is not worrying over the camera and lens themselves, if I dropped them, they're not expensive and I'd survive, versus dropping $8k worth in a single drop would bother me and I wouldn't shoot as freely and I wouldn't enjoy that as much. But the silence of mirrorless.... oh the silence, that really just keeps me happy. I love that my kids and others don't know I've even taken a photo. And the size difference is significant, lighter weight, but volume wise, just much smaller. Love that. I don't regret the switch out.

They're all just tools. I don't really worry about the name on them. Go for what does what you need and enjoy them.

If Sony is the next step for you, enjoy it! Don't fret the swap!

One of the ways to deal with this is to avoid the Gmasters

For instance, much of your Fuji kit can be converted to Sony equivalent with minimal size increase. Batis 25, FE 85, 16-35f4

And no need for a grip, that Sony battery is no joke, it runs all day.

I don’t have gmasters, do have 2.8 FF zooms, no escaping that size, other than not using them.... and for the most part, I don’t use them.

The difference with my kit is that I can focus more of my energy creating one system.

My travel kit, landscape kit, event shooter, all one eco system . It works great in all those scenarios.

Life is much simpler. Having to decide between what you consider is a lesser system vs your ultimate in comfort, is not a decision I need to make. I simply bring the same system everywhere. Everything is compatible no worries.

On photogenic travels , I can bring a set of specialty lenses as well as a few travel friendly primes and/or zooms, for social occasions. More often than not, my compact gear can perform double duty. For instance, if I were going to the Grand Canyon with your gear, do I bring the canon for the epic landscapes or Fuji for the travel friendliness? Fortunately all I would need is my Sony kit. Having been there before, a 12-24, 50, 200 kit would work well, around 1.1kg. I like having the ultra small 35 at all times traveling, so another 120g to that.

When I’m not traveling, 28f2, 50f1.8 works for me, less than 400g total, still FF IQ.

When I don’t feel like photography, 120 gram 35mm just in case.

The eco system has plenty of small and compact options. The Fuji 50-140 is a large lens, doesn’t make the entire system large, you agree?

Not trying to sell anyone nor myself on the sony switch. I still fell this will be a costly stupid decision. Especially when Canon finally does get off their horse and make a FF mirrorless body.

Your definitely a good candidate for a fuji system. Light weight and your more apt for manual settings and "want" to be in control of the camera. The fuji was an upgrade from the canon aps-c for you for sure.

I still think the Fuji is the travelers best friend. Cannot get any better quality for lighter. Charlie has the best wording really for me... it's about building "one" system. You can have the good 2.8 stuff... the good 1.4 stuff... then can also get some good lightweight smaller primes and F4 zooms. Sure you can do that with the Canon... but you don't get the features. The Sony is not really saving you much weight but your not giving up anything on the output side.

Ugh. You sold the 200L? To help purchase the transition to Sony? I don't know if there's an equivalent in the FE line up in the works.
