Sold all my Canon gear over 2 years ago and went Leica M. No regrets. 200 2L (thought i would really miss it but don't) 85L 35L and 24L all sold. Cannon cameras all sold also.

Now have

Leica M 10
Leica M 262
Leica M-E
Leica MM

Leica 24mm 2.8 Elmarit
Leica 35mm 1.4 Summilux FLE
Leica 75mm 2.5 Summarit
Leica 90mm f/2 Summicron APO
Zeiss 35mm 2.8 Biogon ZM

Do not miss my Canons AT ALL. Leica glass is insanely good. The M 10 is the finest 135 or crop digital camera i have ever shot with and I have shot with a lot of digital cameras. Rangefinders are not for everyone though. They are perfect for me. To the OP I doubt you will miss Canon either. I really thought OI would miss the 2002L but i don't. Not at all. Not for one second . And the benefit of the much smaller bodies and lenses is the huge bonus. And lenses with special renderings is also a great benefit. I think your Sony equipment will be such that you will not miss the Canons. I will admit during the change I was a little nervous about it. Now, looking back, I can't see why. Good luck on the transition but don't fear it.

When I get too old to handle the larger lenses for birding, I plan to switch to Leica. For now, I'm very happy with Canon. I can use a monopod or tripod for stationary birds... and hand holding works for now with birds in flight. I really think the genre you shoot determines which system will be best for you... but what do I know?

What's the old saying? -- bodies come and go, but glass is forever.
I haven't followed much of your reasons to switch, but I can only assume the Sony camera body has swayed you, not their lens lineup?

Wasn't really any of that. Probably just a whole slew of things. Sony glass doesn't give me lust like the red ring does. It's hard to divorce the Canon system. I'm realizing though that I need to break the emotions away from any one system and concentrate on my output. Sony gives me a bit more of what I'm looking for in output. Few other things.

There is a premium factor for going Sony. Eeek...

I contemplate with this idea everyday. I shoot with both a 5d mark 3 and Mark 4 with a slew of lenses.

100mm L 2.8
35 1.4 L
24-70 2.8 L
70-200 2.8 L
135 2 L

Now a part of me is personally a freak for new tech and Sony has it lately. So that’s a good portion of what’s driving me then there’s the fact that I shot a sweet 16 just this weekend and I felt like I missed a few shots due to poor lighting at the venue and having to play catch up with my settings whereas if I had the EVF of the Sony, I would have seen how my picture would come out before even snapping.

So I’m playing with the concept of dumping both bodies and scoring 2 Sony ones with adapters as I don’t intend to switch out of glass.

Here's is a visual of the reason I do not miss Canon one bit. I rarely photograph birds but for what i do shoot there is not a better tool.

current line up:
left to right
Leica M-E 75mm 2.5 Summarit
center bottom
Leica M 10 Leica 35mm 1.4 Summilux FLE
center top
Leica M 262 Leica 90mm f2 Summicron APO
right
Leica M Monochrom Leica 24mm 2.8 Elmarit
taken with a:

35mm Zeiss 2.8 Biogon C
and a borrowed Leica M 10

If you changed over because of weight I doubt you will notice the difference. I have been looking as well and here's what I found comparing a kit with one body (5DIV vs A7RIII), a 16-35/2.8, 24-70/2.8 and 70-200/2.8. Yes, I'm a zoom guy and a 2.8 guy as well. I have no idea how this would turn out if you were ok with f4 zooms.

The Canon kit weighs in at 8.55 pounds and costs about 9,000 at B&H today.

The Sony kit weighs in at 8.11 pounds and costs about 10,600 at B&H today.

If you switch the zooms out for say Sigma primes, no matter what you buy the cost will be $300 more for Sony and the weight will be .36 pounds less.

You have to believe that the Sony camera will give you better photos to make the switch. For me, and perhaps many of us, any camera made in the last couple of years has more capabilities than I have skills so I have decided not to switch at this time.

BINGO !!

To spare weight, I simply removed grips from both my FF Canon bodies. But I was well aware that with Canon, Nikon or even Sony, the weight difference for comparable glass was near zilch.

One thing I did, was get an f/4 70-200mm for half weight in the forest, rather than take the f/2.8 that I usually use for portraits.

As you said, there are so many options and features, that each brand should more than suffice without switching. It would practically take a big reason to justify switching. But I can see where a small reason to one person may be a big reason to another.

This thread made me think a joke .......

I traded in my 15 pound Canon gear for this Leica gear that weighs only 240 ounces.

It's so much easier lugging around ounces instead of pounds.

My 200 2L and 85L weighed more than all Leica gear combined. Thats no joke. Add two more Canon lenses and then 4 bodies well you get the drift.

Two 1DX II weigh more than 4 of my M bodies.

When Im on the street it is usually my MM and my 35 Lux FLE and when I am working it is usually two cameras and two lenses. Not only lighter but a lot smaller and less obtrusive. And then there is that great Leica glass....
