Need Boom or grip arm recommendations

Hi, Is your existing stand topped off with a full Baby Pin (like a C-stand) or just the more usual stud/spigot? The former is strongly preferred for an Extension Arm or Boom.

Kupo's 40 in Hex Arm is good, but as LHB says, you should price in a Kupo Grip-Head complete in addition.

OK. Personally I don't think that a stud topped stand is strong enough for the leverage exerted by an extension arm. If you go that route, certainly fully counter-balance the Arm, IMO.

I agree. Frankly I'm not sure I'd put more than a counterbalanced grip arm on most spigot stands.

For most of my purposes a C stand and grip arm is perfect. If I am working in tight quarters I often have to have stand legs overlapping. With a 360 and 42" octa I can extend the arm a little more than half way and have room to put the soft box wherever I need it with a counterbalance on the other end of the arm. It is a set up that is steady in a controlled environment.

I have larger stands with baby pins and larger bases when I have more space and there are other people wandering around.

I use this on the very end of my grip arm to counterbalance.

Also always use weights on the base if going over 5-6 feet.

I'd check the specs on your current stand and see if it can handle the weight. I have no problem putting a Profoto Acute2 or Compact300ws monolight in my 150cm Elinchrom Octa on a Matthews C Stand with Hollywood Arm as long as it's secured with a set weight but wouldn't even consider a standard lightstand with or without a boom. I also have a Super Boom that can handle just about everything I own, it's paid for itself in the 20+ years that I've owned it. Buy once and avoid wasting money.

Could you give us a link to your existing stand? The AD360 is not too heavy but that softbox is bulky. There may be workarounds but with a questionable stand, you'd need to use a counterweight to precisely balance out the loaded extension arm - and the off-set from the stand will be c 20 in using a 40 in Arm.

Tx. Those are decent stands but the top fitting (stud) will only occupy the lower half of a Grip-Head's 5/8th in receiver - meaning that any leverage applied will, so to speak, be met by half the resistance that, say, a C-stand would offer. (The top fitting of a C-stand or Kupo's Baby Roller is twice as long and c 3 times as strong as the stud on your stands.) Sorry, but it's difficult to recommend that you proceed using an Extension Arm on those stands - on safety grounds.
