The 600 has a much better minimum focus distance (able to focus 5ft closer) With the use of teleconverters and crop body camera's the 600 is much more versatile. The 600 is a much sharper lens. The 600 is better priced than the 800 The 600 is newer technology. I too considered the 800 but decided on the 600 for the above reasons. I am thrilled with my EF 600mm f/4L IS II and do not regret the purchase
