Thanks. I can usually tell by looking at them, a few subtle differences. He is a little bigger. Also, the male is more relaxed and at the same time is more ascertive. Their calls are different, their call is a Woohoo. The 2nd note is lower for the male while 2nd note is higher for the female.
Currently she is in the hollow incubating and only leaves for food, which he provides. So it's easy to follow who's who. As the weeks pass she will become dirty, no bathing and stained from the hollow. Her tail feathers also become ragged from living in the hollow so it becomes even easier. When they were mating, nightly for weeks, I had nightly confirmation that I was identifying correctly.

Thank you very much!!!!

Male Powerful owl. Not eating, rather holding a partial Ring-tailed possum which he gave to the female, who ate it (completely) soon after. If I go down tomorrow she'll probably cough up a pellet with the lower half of a Possum skeleton in it.

Hello and thanks for allowing me to join. This is my first post and I'm very open to critique, I appreciate any feedback. The below images are of my first encounter with a Great Grey Owl. I'm not sure about the first image, he was rising out of the snow behind a small snowbank but I do enjoy the second one.

I won't pretend to be qualified to critique. I do like them though, interesting with the snow.

Love these shots Frosty! I only wish you had a third shot of it just coming out with a Snow Rabbit, or even some rodent in it's talons. I had to linger a while to study them, and wonder if the snow weren't blown out, would that improve them any? I think not for me. If I were to change anything, I would crop about 1.5" off the left of the bottom shot, and about 1" from the bottom, to bring it's eyes closer to the center of the frame.

Congrats on being there for these great captures. K

Thanks Keith, I appreciate the feedback. I played with the highlights but I think I like the minimal look more, and the snow was pretty fresh so there wasn't mush texture anyway. He came up empty that time but he stuck with it and made it happen eventually

It's blood and guts month!
The male Powerful owl a few nights ago with bottom half of a Possum and tonight with partial Flying fox.
Both nights he arrived and called many times but the female did not leave the hollow.

Thanks Richard. Several tens of thousands of Ring-tails would be taken in Sydney each year by the Powls.
Natural selection may mean we end up with Super Ring-tails! Faster and smarter than your typical Ring-tail.

Both shots are good, sharp focus and all.

But the 2nd shot I am not quite understanding. The feathers on top of the owl, do these feathers belong to the same bird?

Did you by chance crop this photo? I wish I could see a wider shot showing the entire bird to better understand what I am looking at! ;-)a

Welcome to POTN!!!
