Male eastern screech owl emerges from the nest cavity before the evening hunt. I couldn’t see the female, I’m thinking she’s now tucked back further inside incubating eggs.

I’m not sure if it’s always the case but the male in this nest has longer ear tufts which easily distinguishes him from the female. I only know for certain because I’ve seen him breed her on two separate occasions. The females are larger though and will do almost all of the incubating while the male hunts and brings her food.

Edit: Here are a couple of older photos taken earlier this month. The 1st has the male in front with the female further back. It’s a fairly long log they’re in, over 36” so you can’t always see them clearly in there and it’s very difficult with the light when they’re not out on the edge. The 2nd photo is of the female, that day the male was out at the other entrance of the nest (similar to my last photo of him).

A pair of barred owls took up residence next door. They have been such a pleasure spotting and hearing. We also see they started a family too.
