swbkrun, both great images.

I prefer #2, but would have preferred a tighter crop to remove the distraction (door I think) in the shadows on the left.

Thanks. That’s and easy fix. I’ll give it a go later.

I like the second photo better.

I'd try bringing up the highlights a bit more to provide a bit more depth. And rather than crop to remove the door I'd just eliminate the hinge in post. It's the hinge that distracts me.

I'm new to this board and am unsure of the etiquette. Would it be ok for me to post a quick editing showing what I mean?

First one has dog on it. And log. Both are well made.
Second one has dog head and else separate and different, visually disconnected . Not due to bokeh, but overprocessing.

What a sweet face! #2 with a tighter crop, eliminating the door hinge to the left and the dead space to the right.

I like the first one more but I think you need to close down your aperture a bit in order to get the entire dogs face sharp. I find the out of focus nose on the 2nd image distracting...would have been stronger to have the nose in focus.

I removed the hinge and I tried to different ways to brighten the highlights, couldn't decided which I prefered. I masked the the background so the highlights didn't get boosted there because I felt that made the background compete for attention.
