Hey guys. So I am a wedding photographer using a 5d4 primarily with a 5d3 as backup.

This has happened 3 times when shooting weddings. I get an error message on my camera, saying something like "err02 - card 2 can not be read, please format)

When this happens I can no longer shoot, and the last 10 or so images I have taken is not saved to card

As a wedding photographer, this is probably the worst case scenario. Once I lost photos from the ring exchange.

The same card then works fine in my 6d, and this has happened to 2 or 3 different cards

Has this happened to anybody else? Is this a common problem with the 5d4?

This is in fact my second 5d4. My first one has an err 01 which was even worse and had to have it exchanged

I am pretty over this situation, I need reliability in my camera. I am getting anxiety when shooting, thinking this error message is always going to happen

So I assume SD card. Obvious question, what about CF?
If this happened to me once (or if shooting weddings probably before it even happened) I'd be using CF and SD at the same time for backup.

Your right, it seems to be only card slot2, which is SD. I always use CF also and read to both, but the problem is the camera will stop working for a couple of minutes, and the fear of the CF card stuffing up also is pretty scary

Well if you try several SD and the problem persists, is it still in warranty?
If not going CF only seems the best option.

Sandisk cards? Check one carefully and see if V30 is written on the label. If so perhaps you are one having a well documented issue. See https://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php?topic=31261.0 (external link). Note there are 5 pages and I'm not going to go through all five but some have recommended to make sure the camera is up to date on firmware and dealing with Sandisk to get a replacement card.

I note that the latest firmware shown, version 1.04 has a comment "3. Enhances the reliability of communications between the camera and SD card." I would even go so far as flashing the firmware even if you already have version 1.02.

[Edit, thanks to Choderboy's comment below, I corrected firmware version; latest is 1.04, dated 04/13/17]

The only cards I've ever had problems with were Sandisk. Switched to Lexar and no more problems.

Thanks guys. That makes a lot of sense. I use the failing card in my 6d straight after and it works fine.

Good to know that I can just use a different brand and will be okay

All electronic gear has hiccups from time to time. The first time it happened, I'd have rebooted the camera. The second time, I'd throw the card in the trash. I hope a new card fixes it for you.

I have a V30 Sandisk 32GB SD in my 5D4. Firmware is 1.04. 10 weeks and about 5000 shots, no problems yet.

If a SD card gives me any kind of problem, it goes in the trash can. Life is too short for pens that won't work, cheap olives, and faulty memory cards.

That;s funny, The only two cards I have issues with are Lexar cards. They misbehaved in a 40D, 50D and 7D but never in my Nikon 800. I no longer use them in my Canon cameras and have had no further issues with them.

If you review the thread in my initial comment, it seems there is an abundance of information possibly pointing to the combination of the 5DIV and the use of the Sandisk V30 specification card. Even cards that acted up in the 5DIV were very reliable in other cameras.

The only card I have ever had a problem with was a Lexar. It just fell apart (SD card, case split)
It was the first time I tried Lexar, have always used Sandisk. It lasted about 2 years.
