Another EF-S Ultrawide Zoom Question

I recently received permission from the better half to purchase an UW zoom for our upcoming trip to Hawaii. Here is my current gear:
- Canon 70D
- Canon EF-S 17-55
- Canon EF 70-300L

My only experience thus far is with the Canon 10-22. I rented this lens for a trip to Spain a few years ago and really enjoyed it for architecture and other city/street photos.

However, it appears there are some new challengers in the mix including the Canon 10-18 and Tokina 11-20. It appears that the Tokina 11-20 is the best overall, assuming I'm willing to give up the 10mm focal length, but costs approximately twice partly because it is relatively new and there are not a lot of used models.

The two Canons can be had used for approximately the same price as each other. I like the lightweight aspect of the 10-18, but the 10-22 uses the same filter size as my other two lenses (77mm).

I only plan on using this lens for landscapes and architecture photos, I will not be doing any astronomy shots. Additionally, I rarely carry a tripod.

Would appreciate any arguments you have for any of these three (or other) UW zoom lenses

I've owned all three of the lenses you mention. I still own the Tokina 11-20; I sold it once, and bought it again. Keep reading for details, if you need them.

My first UWA zoom was the 10-22. It is an extremely good lens. It is sharp deep into the corners at f/8. It is very good at resisting flare; that said, still use it with a hood. It needs it with the sun just out of, or at the edge of, the frame. The 10-22 also focuses nearly instantly. Great lens.

I purchased the 10-18 while I still owned the 10-22. I wanted something with IS, and in a smaller lighter package. STM for video was a plus. It took me less than two weeks to decide:

that f/4.5-5.6 is just too slow for me,
that IS is (mostly) irrelevant at these focal lengths,
that I don't do video much, or this wide.
I sold the 10-18 quickly.

I bought the Tokina 11-20 while I still owned the 10-22. Up front, the 10-22 focuses faster, and more quietly. The 11-20 is as sharp wide open as the 10-22 is wide open. At f/2.8 the Tokina is 2/3 to 1-1/3 stop faster when wide open. The Tokina is incredibly sharp at f/4 to f/5.6; I never NEED to stop down further. The 10-22 is just as sharp, if I dial in f/5.6 to f/8. In the end, the Tokina lets me get the same shot one stop wider, which means one stop faster on my shutter speed. I sold the 10-22 after a good comparison to the 11-20.

I sold the 11-20 when I switched to all full frame. That lasted about 2 years. I am now back to ONLY APS-c with the 80D. The Tokina 11-20mm f/2.8 was the first lens I bought when I decided to go back to crop cameras. It is a keeper.

One other lens to consider, but with narrower zoom range, is the Tokina 11-6mm f/2.8. It was the precursor to the Tokina 11-20mm. Its range of FL makes it a nice complement to your 17-55mm.

I have owned the Canon 10-22mm, the Tokina 11-16mm and the Tokina 11-20mm at one time or other.
I have always been a fast lens fanatic, so the Canon was a bit slow for my taste. The 11-16mm was fully satisfactory, but have just a bit of FL overlap with the Canon 17-55mm means less lens swapping. And when I bring the Tamron 28-75mm (for weight reasons, rather than the 17-55mm) the 11-20mm means not as much of a FL gap.

I'm a bit confused when you say that the two Canons can be had used for approximately the same price. The Canon ef-s 10-18 is $299 new. The Canon ef-s 10-22 is $649 new. That is more than twice the price new. If you can get them for aproximately the same price used, then either the used price of the 10-18 is much too high, or the used price of the 10-22 is ridiculously low. The 10-22 has a far superior build, although the optics on the 10-18 are at least as good and perhaps a bit better.

Used Canon 10-18 are selling on eBay in the low $200's. Used Canon 10-22 are selling on eBay for the high $200's or low $300's. I guess that is pretty close in price all things considered.

I ended up buying a 10-22 from a forum member here on POTN.
