Unlike most ducks the males change plumage in the Spring. The second one is almost there.

These are really good examples of what one looks like, not that I'd know... heheh
I have tried and tried, but I have so far been unable to get a shot anywhere near this. Or, they are very drab, not in their mating colors, but mostly because they are WAY out there away from shore.

Very nice shots, I am very envious!

Thanks. These were on a small lake in a park in town. A nice variety of ducks are there in the winter and they get used to people.

Great captures ! I was lucky to catch them once while in mating season and their colors a very nice . However I didn't get as close and good quality as you got either . They are a shy duck , quick to leave the area when they find out your close by :( .

Thanks for the comment. We're lucky to have them around here all year round.

Nicely done Ken! It always seems that they're snoozing when I'm trying for a photo shoot.

And when they're not snoozing they're feeding, so you have guess where they'll pop up and get a shot before they dive again. Thanks for the comment.

Thanks. I had a calm morning, some nice light, and the surface was unusually fresh of debris.
