This Rough Legged Hawk was hovering all along the edge of the roadway I was on, and finally came down and landed on a roadside post. Then he went and grabbed a vole in the grass. My presence bothered him not at all.

One of my favorite hawks, Ian, and well-captured. And this one is beautifullly plumaged; often times they appear tawny. Good job!

Hey Jeremy, hi there! Yes, thanks, it was like he flew up to me and wanted to be my friend!

Thanks very much Al, I love their look too. From a distance I thought it was a Grey Ghost Harrier from the colouring but then he flew right up to me and I was suprised it was a RLH, they can have so many colour combinations.

Very nice Ian.

I've never seen one of these. Perhaps they do not make it this far south.

Thanks for the comments guys. Doubtful the Roughies would make it as far south as Texas. From what I've seen they aren't even as adventurous as Snowy Owls, and seem to stop their southward trip around the border.

Gorgeous captures Ian! They're really beautiful raptors. We had a vagrant come down years ago. Watching it hunt succesfully and spending time photographing it. I'll never forget the experience.

That must have been a sight Brad, right after me saying theres likely little hope of seeing one in Texas! I think they actually hover and hunt better than Northern Harriers. Heres one more of him perched.

Super nice shots, Ian, especially #1! Don't pop in here as often so excuse my absence.

Guessing from the hawk's actions, you must look pretty harmless. ;-)a

Hi Rog, I was wondering where you were! I'm not sure he even knew I was there when he was hovering and hunting, he was so focussed on his task. I was in my mobile blind, driving alng the road when I first saw him. As he progressed down the road, I was actually driving along and shooting as I went (it was a very remote, untravelled dirt road), and his eyes were on the line of tall grass along the ditch. Thanks for commenting!
