Before I try to contact Canon here, let me get a clarification. You bought the camera on EBay India, received it with all the accessories except for the warranty card and are not paying the seller because you don't know if it is new or used (it has a refurbished sticker on it) and do not know where/when the camera was initially purchased and want to register your purchase at Canon in Japan using just the serial number to register it?
Yes, you got that right.
Yes, I did, immediately after I failed to register it with Canon India website. Please refer that error message I got in my last post. They gave me an email ID with a Reference No.I emailed that person, no reply from him in spite of several reminders. But Canon India Support did ask me whether the serial no. contained a leading 0, which in my case is no, it doesn't.
The seller didn't tell me the source from where he got it.
I don't care if someone in these forums have registered it. In fact, you might also give it a go. Once registered, the details of registration IMHO would, or rather should, be in some database. Now, Canon Japan Support personnel can simply query that database and find out who has registered and when. So if its registered recently, then it would be someone who's read this post has done it, if its registered ages back, perhaps they can tell the name of the person who registered it & location of that person. If not registered, then its a smuggled item, not sold thru legal channels (regular retail channels).
I guess its Canon's policy to allow registrations only on the website of the country of origin or manufacture or purchase. For e.g., trying to register my cam in Canon Canada or Canon USA might not work, just as it didn't in Canon India. The serial no tells the origin/country of manufacture or country of sale and maybe other details.
I'm a newbie to digital cameras and photography in general. I followed the Getting Started Guide. As per that, the camera functioned correctly. And there are no visible signs of wear and tear, the screws don't seem to have been opened yet.
Yes, the website told me so. Please see that message I got from Canon India website. Why don't you try registering it yourself on Canon India?
That's all I need. The URL, please.
