great shots John.
I need some suggestion from all of you.
My EF-S 17-85 gives me Err 99 when shot at 17~24mm above that it performs as usual. So I took it to canon service center. The person said it will be 15000JPYen ( approx 140 USD ) So I am thinking if it is worth to repair or buy another lens for this camera.

Other options I think are
EF 24-85 ( discontinued, so need to search Market)
EF 17-40 L ( well high price!)

No Tamrom and Sigma as they can not be operated Full Time manual and the ring rotates while focusing.

I already have 5DMII + 24-70L but for some reason I have kept it in another country for and will not have access to it for 8 more months

So I need to either repair this glass or get new one. No issues with wide angle, I have SIgma 15mm but anyway dont shoot that wide.

What do you suggest? Repair or New lens?

Good Morning -
I would not get the lens repaired given it is still partially usable. Even if not, I'd let it go.
You have good coverage at 24-70 and at f/2.8. If you need wider, maybe a prime would do, particularly if you do not shoot wide often. It could be Canon, but if you don't shoot wide often, other brands may be suitable if cost is a concern. 17-40 has a lot of overlap with your 24-70, so you only gain at the wide end. If it were me, i'd pick a wide Canon prime for the rare occasions that I need to shoot wider than 24mm.
Cheers,
John

Hey thanks a lot John,
for the same reason I was wondering why should I repair...
I already have Sigma 15mm fisheye for wide shots. And on 20D it is not fisheye anymore.
So I need a lens which I can use on 20D and may be useful for the FF film camera I have.. The film camera has a really chipo kit lens which is useless.

I had asked this one two awhile back...and tried looking in to it myself , but as I don't make it down to Tokyo much I haven't been able to ask directly...

therefore, wondering if you ever got anymore info on the CPS program in Japan?

Greetings - I cannot help, having never bought used, but with strong yen and weak dollar, unless your income is in yen, no bargains here methinks.
And unrelated:

Hey John,
Thanks for the nudge via email, and I had a look through your gallery.
Words fail me....

I really hope the boys in power can develop some foresight to stop this from happening again.

Greetings All -
As the weather cools and fall colors start to emerge soon, it might be time for another photo shoot get together somewhere, since we have not done that in quite a while. We spoke of Nikko and Kyoto last year, but neither materialized. We did do Kamakura, Nokogiriyama and Ueno though. I am up for a fall foiliage shoot, having been too early and too late in Nikko in the past and would be up for a weekend in Kyoto as well (or any other place). Looking for other ideas as well. Any interest...suggestions?
Many cheers from Kamogawa,
John

Just have to chime in here about Canon's repair service...

Had a 24-70 with a broken lens mount, filled out a quick repair request form (all the service centers are more than a convenient drive away, so no drop off service for me), got a box the next day, packed it up, the next morning got a call with an price estimate and quoted 7-10 days to fix. Well the next morning, got another call saying it was done and had already been shipped. Just got it about 5 minutes ago COD'd to my door.

Gotta say I am very impressed at the turn around and communication...

Now I just have to make it to a center to pick up a CPS form...
