Everyone hates the what to charge question but I’m hoping this is a bit different. I’m being approached by a friend of mine who is leading a team that is writing a new colllege biology book. They are asking me to take the photos for the new book and the editor needs a price. I’m looking at 30-50 photos of cut away models and dissections. Editor will be responsible for getting all releases. What are your thoughts per pairing?

In my experience, costing is both pretty simple and personal.

How many hours, max/min will the project take? What is your time worth to you per hour? What direct expenses do you anticipate? How much general overhead will you attribute to the project? That gives you a starting price that you can adjust for other factors like your enthusiasm for the project, your workload and the price of good red wine.
