Please help me. WHY are these photos turning out so boring? The kids are gorgeous and the composition is fair. Can anyone help me alter this in PS or offer any tips to make them more interesting? I used the channelmixer and they were shot in RAW. I really hate this expression but I need help making my B&W's "pop".

Thanks

Maybe the depth of field is a little too deep, letting other things distract from the subject? What lens/settings did you use?

What is the story you are telling?

If its a portrait of the girl then crop in tight.

Try and use a lower F stop to diffuse the background

The photos are not portraits, they are more of a "moment in the life of" shot. Chrnat asks a good question. These photos show potential, and I would rather see you refine your technique than abandon it. Your work will be very interesting, once you find your feet.

Not quite enough isolation of the subjects.

Too much irrelevant material in the frame.

Composition doesn't even come to mind yet.

Spend more time looking for situations with better lighting, and if you want to have more than one subject, make sure the subjects have relevance to one another.

You have cropped in tighter and blurred the background, which is a good trick to learn how to do in PS.

Yes, I think it is definitely an improvement. Now the subject is separated from the background and yet the background is very quietly helping to establish the milieu.

The image is now easily twice as effective, and you knew exactly what had to be done.

Very Creative - that's what the digital darkroom is all about!

very cool, thanks for your take chrnat. i'm by no means a purist but those are slightly collage-y for my personal taste. still, very cool.

Go with the shallow dof as was mentioned. Don't be discouraged though- you've tried to tackle B&W photography which is harder than colour. You have to get all the elements perfect to make a really succesfull B&W photo. Colour is much more forgiving.
