Trying to decide on a small camera for when I don't want to carry around my DSLR... I'm looking at the Canon G7x Mk II and the Panasonic DMC-LX100. I'm a Canon fan, but the Panasonic has a bigger sensor. I'd use it for running around on vacation and maybe taking one of these instead of the full kit of DSLR for a couple of trips this summer to the Grand Canyon and Yellowstone. I love my DSLR but lugging it around on a plane will be a hassle.

I went through all this research a couple of years ago.

According to some online reviews, the Panasonic LX-100 does not fully use the entire sensor so it seems you won't get the full m4/3 benefits. https://www.dpreview.com …panasonic-lumix-dmc-lx100 (external link)

For me, the clincher was: do I want smaller/lighter but still require a bag of lenses such as an m4/s system vs a camera that I can fit inside a jacket or trouser pocket?

So I opted for the G7x. I now also have the G7x mkii and I am very happy overall. I also considered the G1x with its bigger sensor, but with the trade-off of a bigger body and protruding lens I felt it was just a tad too large to be truly "pocketable".

So with reference to your query, it is a matter of how small/compact/light you want to go. As you stated that you are a Canon fan, would you consider the G1X series? Or an EOS M series allowing you to possibly use your existing lens? (I have never used any of the M series though).

Good luck!

Big fan of the small Canons. I have a G15 that I like but the small sensor isn't the greatest and I don't think I'd be happy if it was all I took on a trip. The G7xII looks great imo. I'll look into the G1x as well. The LX100 seems amazing to me too. Right now I'm leaning towards it from the reviews I've read about it's amazing lens and large sensor combo.
