I am going nuts with this photo for more reasons that one, but the dang horizon (water line I suppose) is constantly looking crooked! I am not sure if it's because the bucket is not flat on the sand or what... But maybe I have been looking at it too long! I can't figure it out!! Please help!

Here is one without the bucket and it still seems off...

The horizon is slightly out of level ( ignore the waterline ) but it looks odd because the horizon is slightly curved due to lens distortion.
A quick level of the horizon and distortion correction brings it all back in line. I have left the borders in to show the correction applied.

A simple distortion fix and straighten in Photoshop or similar.

Also - f*** the horizon. Don't get overtaken but this thing, as in this case and many others it does not really matter. I am not talking about obviously crooked images, but being slightly off is ok.

Note for the future - if someone starts their critique by saying that the horizon is off - just stop reading and move on :D

Ask me anything photography related. I probably won't know the correct answer but I will definitely give my opinion.

"Normal folk" may well not know there lens distortion or horizon issues but will, in my experience, notice something is off. Unless we a going for that, we are well advised to make corrections.

Agree. I saw that the horizon was curved without having to hold a straightedge against it. Of course, whether I'm normal is an open question.

Getting serious for a moment: a person with uncorrected astigmatism might not be able to tell what was wrong or might not even notice the curve.

It's a family vacation picture of your kids. It's a wonderful memory for you to cherish. What's the problem?

Because the plan is to print a rather large canvas to hang in our home. I would like to have it be somewhat lined up correctly as it will bother every time I look at it. Even if not printing I would like to have it look "correct."

I think having a bit of curve in the horizon is nice, but it might be that it needs to be curved by the same amount on both sides to look even and more 'calming'.
