There are, but not enough to be located near everyone who needs them. Our Seth Thomas mantel clock (inherited) goes to a shop for cleaning every few years. It's overdue.

I have an old Seth Thomas mantle clock I need to work on also, I have lots of mechanical clocks in the house that still work so I have not tried to fix it yet. My Grandfather clock probably just needs a good cleaning but the movement is old enough I might just replace it. It is not rare and a version of the movement is still being made.

That may be unusual these days. Within my memory, clocks were mechanical or electrical, but all were analog. Now digital clocks, or at least time displays, are built into so many devices that you're nearly always near one. Do people still buy clocks?

On clocks in devices: We had our kitchen remodeled in 2015. Old stove had an analog clock, new one has digital. Microwave also has digital. So the room has two places where you can check the time, unless the power goes out. But neither one is pleasant to look at. Digital time displays aren't attractive; they're only informative. For esthetic appeal, I'll take analog.

I do know cars. I'm a licensed mechanic, cars are my career.

I'm a technician, but my cars run on 750 volts. ;-)a

My youngest brother thinks I am weird for wearing a watch, he uses a cellphone for when he wants to know the time.
I am not a fan of digital watches or clocks, I have a few analog quartz watches but I prefer mechanical even though it is not as accurate.

Your brother finds it easier to take out a phone, push buttons, and put it away than to turn his arm slightly? -?

My current watch is quartz and extremely accurate. It's powered by sunlight or any light; never needs a new battery. The trade-off is, it doesn't do fancy tricks. No alarm, no calendar, not even a second hand. Still, it's all I need.

Plus, you can tell the difference between clockwise and counter-clockwise. Someday, youngsters may have to learn this out of a book like doing math with a pencil and notepad.

I agree, I do wear a digital watch for work, but I have 2 analog watches for all other times.

I love watches. Watches are a dress accessory that I wish more folks paid attention too. My last boss loved watches and wore them well.

I stopped wearing a watch way back in grade 10 when I tore the tendons in my left wrist that connect to my thumb. I wear watches right at the wrist, across the wrist bone. The tendon tore right under the watch band. Two casts, a brace, physio, and 8 months recovery to "fix" that injury. A watch or snug fitting cuff puts just enough pressure on the site that it will get sore and then painful. I still have that watch, a Timex, and use it occasionally.

I cannot wear a watch at work. I am constantly checking my phone to see the time. I'm keeping my eye open for a clock that I can hang on the wall in my bay.

When I respond to a call with the fire department - I'm on the support operations team (not actually a fire fighter) - I need to be wearing a watch as every action recorded with a time stamp. If I'm running accountability, I need to constantly monitor how long the fire fighters have been on air, as it is my responsibility to call for them to exit the fire.

Ironically, I haven't owned or used a watch since 1977.

Melody, take it from a former volunteer, when you are on scene as safety officer you are one of the most important firefighters, second only to a good scene commander. Thank you for your service.

Yes, most likely. I can't remember the last time I received a picture post card or hand written letter, it has been decades ago.

That's surprising.

I hardly get postcards anymore, but I do send about three or four per year.

I receive handwritten letters via postal mail at a rate of about a half dozen per year, and I send a roughly equal amount.

Almost everyone I know already has their phone out - they do something on their phone every 5 minutes or so. . Hence, they are constantly aware of the time, because it is always right there, displayed clearly on the device that they are continually looking at.
